Charlton assistant manager Alex Dyer says he and first team coach Damien Matthew have not been told where their futures lie.

The pair took training on Tuesday following the sacking of manager Chris Powell and subsequent appointment of new head coach Jose Riga.

Dyer and Matthew were widely expected to be relieved of their duties along with Powell, but the Addicks’ number two revealed they will work alongside Riga until told otherwise.

“We are still here,” said Dyer.

“No one has told us to go and until that happens, we will stay.

“Jose Riga and Karel Fraeye (assistant head coach) have made me welcome, they haven’t just pushed me to the side.

“They’ve asked for my advice, and Damien Matthew as well. They haven’t just shoved us aside and said stand over there in training.

“We took training yesterday together and we picked the side.

“It is difficult but we are professional people and we’re just trying to do the best we can.”

Powell appointed Dyer as his right-hand man shortly after landing the Charlton role in 2011. And Dyer admitted seeing his close friend lose his job has made for a tough couple of days.

He said: “It has been surreal and difficult.

“Obviously everybody knows that he brought me to this club.

“He has been my mate for 25 or 30 years so it was difficult, but we just carry on.

“I spoke to him yesterday and he was all right and in a good place and he just told me to carry on and do my job.

“I will support the two new coaches here until anyone tells me differently. Simple.”

Dyer was not alone in his disappointment.

He added: “They (the playing squad) were upset because he was a valuable member of staff, the gaffer, and he brought a lot of them in.

“They hold him in good respect. Chris is a good man.

“At the same time they understand that they need to carry on and do their job to the best of their abilities.”
