Watford travelled to Merthyr Town in a Southern League fixture.
Trailing 3-1 at half-time, the Brewers recovered to win 6-3 with then record signing George Edmonds scoring five.
The match formed part of an unbeaten 14-game run at the end of the season in the course of which only three points were dropped.
Portsmouth were to win the title from Watford on goal average, before the entire division was absorbed into the Football League as the new third division the following season.
