Watford sold Bruce Dyer to Crystal Palace for £1.25m. Dyer became the country's first million-pound teenager, and the fee was briefly a club record.
However, having been sold after less than a season in the first team and with fewer than 40 appearances to his credit, his sale provoked considerable resentment.
Dyer was to return to Vicarage Road nine years later.
