The O’s certainly have the momentum after Saturday’s hard-fought win against a more than useful Colchester side, and certainly not a team that has gleaned exactly as half as many points as Orient but at this stage of the season, the league table doesn’t lie.

It was ironic that their manager, Joe Dunne, should be bemoaning the fact that it was another defeat after a performance that warranted more and that they can’t keep churning out nil point returns.

But, now most of the division is ensconced in the last quarter of the season and it’s all about results and not how you achieve them, as putting on a show won’t necessarily guarantee a point or even three.

The important thing was we had recorded another win and, yes, an eye-watering 21st of the season and we’re now what many would regard as five points short of ensuring at least a play-off place - given recent end of regular season totals.

Saturday’s win wasn’t arguably one of our best displays this term. To be fair, Orient old-boy, Jabo Ibehre, ran us ragged at times and he’s no different to the player who left us late in the previous decade.

Probably overshadowed during the latter stages of his career here when Lee Steele and Gary Alexander were the first picks, he’s certainly fallen on his feet now at ‘New Layer Road’ and looked very much the focal point of Colchester’s attack.

But, it took a stunning Marcus Bean header to finally undo us. It was unfortunate on Eldin Jakupovic to be a beaten as he has become something of clean sheet specialist in his previous seven Orient appearances by returning a more than impressive five shut-outs.

However despite getting a hand to the effort the ball did cross the line via post and on another day, Colchester could have gone on and registered a win that the neutral (if there is such a thing) might have said they had deserved.

But, as I have said before the Leyton Orient of 2013-14 is a different ‘animal’ and it was probably no surprise that we should go and grab a possibly undeserved winner literally minutes after conceding, given the amount of goal attempts on the day.

Unfortunately, Wolves reclaimed top spot by virtue of their thumping win over a Port Vale side I would have expected to put up a better fight, given their play-off aspirations.

And, Vale are one of the clubs we have to face in the next brace of away fixtures. I remember the last time I went there was a rainy, cold, April Saturday. We didn’t do very well, despite the fact our hosts were all but relegated.

So next Tuesday will be an ideal opportunity to put those ghosts to bed.

But, before that, is this Saturday’s trip to Meadow Lane to face Notts County. They seem to be blowing cold at the moment, having shipped a hatful of goals recently. Obviously, they will be wanting to halt a slide that has seen them slip back into the drop zone after a 6-0 ‘mullerering’ at the hands of Rotherham However, we must not expect a ride up easy street in the East Midlands as I am sure County will be wanting to right a few wrongs.

Up the O’s,

Keep the faith.
