East London Boxing Academy's Patrick Mongan is two stages away from a national title after making it through to the London finals of the ABAE Schoolboy Championships.

Mongan progressed from the first round of the Under-14 competition and will now represent London against the Western Counties in March.

East London Boxing Academy coach Umer Ali Iqbal said: "Patrick is looking really strong in sparring and in the gym and I feel he will be going all the way to a national title.

"Patrick has been working really hard in the gym and keeps telling me he wants the national title and to be recognized as the best boy in his weight category for his age in the country.

"He has the ability to do it and I am extremely proud of the progress he has made over the last year."

The Academy's Habib Akram was beaten in the semi-final by Hornchurch's Jimmy Croxon.

Ishmail Qureshi was forced to withdraw from the Under-13s tournament but he bounced back to beat the undefeated Charlie Brand on Frdiay at the Dagenham Boxing Show.

Meanwhile, another of the club's fighters Zaibah Ullah continued his strong form in 2014 by beating Buster Maytese from Canvet ABC at the Romford Show.

Ullah was the lighter and less experienced of the two fighters but managed to seal the win with a unanimous decision.

He then continued his winning streak on Saturday by beating Cranford ABC's Ahmed Panzada.
