Watford made their first league trip to Middlesbrough for a crucial third division game in front of over 22,000 fans at Ayresome Park.
Visiting keeper Bert Slater was injured in a collision after 17 minutes and, in the absence of a substitute goalkeeper, was replaced between the posts by skipper Keith Eddy.
Middlesbrough went on to win the game 3-0, and ultimately beat the Hornets to promotion by a single point.
