Wood: We've got the players to stay up

This Is Local London: Sam Wood Sam Wood

SAM Wood said it's essential Wanderers preserve their Football League status - and says the players are more than good enough to stay up.

With his side on a run of one win in 18 matches and sitting two points above the relegation zone, Wood and his team mates could be forgiven for fearing the worst about their potential fate at the end of the season.

But the 26-year-old said there is no fear factor around Adams Park despite their precarious league position - adding a lack of goals is the only reason for their predicament.

He said Blues can draw strength from their escape from a similarly hopeless position last year, as they survived the drop despite being bottom of the table in November.

Wood said: "Where we are, we want to stay up and I think we will do that - we've got the players for that.

"From where we are, staying up is a must. We're going to aim as high as possible - there's no set target but we're looking for mid table.

"We did it last year and I don't see why we can't do it again.

"It's not good being down at the bottom but we are always going to look up. The league's so tight, if we get a couple of wins together we'll be flying up the table.

"When you've got Gaz as your manager, he doesn't do negativity and that helps us."

Blues host leaders Chesterfield tomorrow and Wood was in bullish mood going into the game.

He said: "When we played them up at their place I thought we were the better team second half.

"We don't fear anyone in this league. We might be down at the bottom but we are as good as any team. We are just lacking in goals.

"We all know we are lacking in the goal department and that's been the only problem. Hopefully that will change very soon, starting on Saturday."

Wood has a reputation for spectacular strikes after winning goal of the year last season and he said he was keen to get back on the scoresheet.

He said: "It would be lovely if I could help out. I'm playing left back recently so I'm a bit further back than usual but I'd love to score a goal to help the team and push us up the league.

"We just need one or two firing and we'll be fine."
