Gaz: Man for man we can match leaders
IT'S a case of the haves facing the have nots tomorrow as Wanderers face top of the table Chesterfield at Adams Park.
Blues boss Gareth Ainsworth admitted to being envious of the squad depth - and the money to spend - available to his opposite number Paul Cook.
The Spireites chief signed six players in the summer and added two more to his squad in the January transfer window.
Ainsworth said player for player both sides' starting elevens were equals - but he believes it's the reinforcements Cook has up his sleeve that has proved the difference over the course of the season.
He said: "I don't believe there's a great deal between the teams in the league. Money does come into it - the teams who have spent the most are at the top and that's proved to be the case year after year.
"They can get good players in to fill their squad. If you put out your best eleven, and it's eleven against eleven, I firmly believe it's highly competitive and the teams right at the bottom can compete against the teams right at the top.
"There's no doubt in my mind we are, man for man, as good as Chesterfield. Squad for squad is where the bigger teams have got a higher calibre of players in.
"I think Wycombe's best eleven would give anyone a match."
Chesterfield booked a place at Wembley in the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in midweek despite a 1-0 home defeat by Fleetwood Town.
It was just their second defeat in the ten matches they've played in 2014, whereas Wanderers haven't picked up three points since before Christmas.
Nevertheless it's a challenge Ainsworth is relishing.
He said: "We've proved we can beat the better teams, from Gillingham last year through to this year, so what better time to end this winless run than against the leaders?
"We've got a big run of games coming up - there's ten or 11 in the next five weeks, which is going to be quite a test on the squad."
One of those is the rearranged fixture at Cheltenham Town, which will now take place on Tuesday, March 18 with a 7.45pm kick off.
