Blues shot-shy thanks to Morgan absence

This Is Local London: Dean Morgan Dean Morgan

LOSING Dean Morgan for six weeks affected the firepower in the rest of the Wanderers squad, Blues boss Gareth Ainsworth said.

The striker was in the best form of his career earlier in the campaign as he netted five goals in four games in August and September.

At that time Wanderers were flying high at the top of the league but Morgan has had a stop-start season since then after being blighted by injury.

He's only added one more to his total tally since September but that's been enough to keep him as the side's joint top scorer - and Ainsworth said it's no coincidence the goals have dried up in his absence.

He said: "He's had two injury setbacks, which isn't good for a forward in form. At the start of the season he was on fire. If we'd have kept him fit he'd have scored a few more.

"The strikers around him, Matt McClure, Stevie Craig and Jo Kuffour, were hitting goals. Once we lost Dean it seemed to have an effect on everyone and there was a downturn in putting chances in the net.

"We need to find that goalscoring touch again. Strikers need to keep playing a run of games and it would be great to get him back in form."

Morgan broke down on his latest comeback against Fleetwood Town last Tuesday, being substituted in the first half, but he was been back in full training this week and is in contention to face one of his former clubs Chesterfield at the weekend.

Saturday's postponement of the trip to Cheltenham Town proved a blessing in disguise for Morgan, who was instead given extra time to recover from his latest injury.

Ainsworth said: "We hoped it was just a fascial tear of his hamstring and luckily it's turned out to be that. There's a bit of scarring there.

"Being out for six weeks, we didn't want to take any risks. We'll be very careful with Dean Morgan."
