Watford boss Beppe Sannino feels sorry for Samba Diakite after midfielder sent off against Middlesbrough

Beppe Sannino said he felt sorry for Samba Diakite after the midfielder was sent off on his first start for the Hornets but the Watford boss believes the red card brought the best out of his team.

Diakite was shown a straight red in the second period of the 1-0 win over Middlesbrough after a reckless two-footed challenge.

His dismissal threatened to ruin Watford's hopes of sealing a valuable win but Sannino was sympathetic towards his player.

"I feel sorry for Diakite because he has been sent off and it was the first game he started in a Watford shirt," Sannino said.

"I am not sorry for the tackle but for him because it was an important moment of the game but we look forward."

Boro piled on the pressure in the second period and Fernando Forestieri was forced to drop into midfield to make up for Diakite's error.

Sannino believes the red card revealed his team's character and singled out Forestieri for special praise.

"This sending off allowed my team to show good spirit and Forestieri was able to drop into midfield and do another role so I'm happy about that," said the Italian.

"He was still winning a lot of tackles in the defensive phase so I think Forestieri understood today the soul of this team.

"Then behind Forestieri too all my team were able to show me that soul."

A rubbish player. Even before the reckless tackle he did the letter after E all E all squared. How much are we paying for him? Hope that now he is suspended we are not paying anything towards his wages. He may have been wanting to prove a point with the tackle but before then I did not see anything to suggest that he will help our cause.

We have a big squad so we don't need to risk playing this guy.

I agree it was a bad challenge, but we only have the first half to judge his ability. He was not alone in finding the going difficult against a determined Middlesborough.

Let's reserve judgement, I doubt he would read this page, but if he did I don't think he would be busting a gut in future. Anyone wearing a Watford shirt must be encouraged.

Felt 'sorry for him'? It was a reckless tackle for a propfessional. He let the side down. The ref was in a good position and had no hesitation. No only was the guy a liability we were the weaker side until he was sent off being over run in midfield. Ironically both sides going down to 10 men evened things up and it was a cracking game after that. Loanees alays bring the downside that they have to be played. This was an unecessary loan. Midfield is not where we are weakest, especially since Tozer arrived. An early return to QPR would be in our and the players interest.

As others have said, everyone deserves a second chance. Deeney went to prison, served his time, and by and large the club and fans stood by him, very well indeed. A poor first half with an absurd tackle is clearly not what any of us want, but he does deserve a second chance, everyone does. The flip side of the coin is that momentum is everything in a game, and usually when your guy gets carted off, the other team is savvy enough to keep their eleven on the field and make you pay. Volatile players can be a huge liability, but I do think the jury should be out on this one for a while yet. Deeney was charged with a crime, we forgave him, I forgave him, and I am glad I did. The challenge was stupid, but lets put it into perspective, he was not Cantona lashing out at a Palace fan, he hasn't tried to kill anyone, there are far worse things in life, he just made an ar$e of himself when the simple truth is, a few weeks back our season was done, it is now very much alive, and after last May's disappointment, there is a small but growing sense of optimism... and I don't think any of us want to lose that after such a torrid few months. It shows Beppe has a human side, and I for one am fine with that.

He looks very 'leggy' to me, like he has no timing on anything. His passing is awful and so far hasn't been anywhere near the level of the other players. The challenge, 'a two footed lunge through the air' could break someones leg. Lets not forget he got booked on his debut because of a late bad tackle. He is a liability and the QPR fans are right about him. No wonder 'Arry' wanted rid. For me the only thing he adds is a liability for us to play more often with 10 men. It's hard enough as it is. Surely this was a Nani inspired signing? Not good in my book in any way, shape or form. For me, so far he looks like a non league player.

It is a natural reaction of any manager to defend his players but Beppe has got this one wrong. It was obvious that Diakite was off the pace long before the tackle happened, with misplaced passes and a general lack of ideas as to what to do with the ball when it came his way. He should have come off at half time and made way for Mirkel or Cristian simple as that.
The tackle was not only very dangerous but it was also very stupid. He could have caused the Boro guy serious injury and left us deep in the brown stuff if their player hadn't been sent off. Diakite needs to be told in no uncertain terms that he let himself, the team and the club down. He now needs to learn from what happened and come out stronger.
On a more positive note it was just great to get another 3 points. There have been so many times in the past when we have lost games like this but we came through in the end. A strong all round team performance which gives us something to build on. It was great to hear the crowd chanting Beppe's name. Special mention for all the 1881 crew for great vocal support right to the end. Best for a long while. Now for Yeovil COYH

It is interesting how quickly people make their minds up about players. I have nothing against Merkel and think he is growing into the role, but I saw nothing much to impress mel in the first couple of games, and of course he was sent off for an awful challenge himself. Yet he was getting support on here and Diakite seems to be getting both barrels from the off. There are plenty of players that we only get to see for a few fleeting moments that have a lot more about them than we can judge in the quick space of time... Weimann, Agbonlahor, Townshend, Bridcutt, Danny Rose, to name just a few recent ones. Maybe one day I'll be smart enough to make a judgement on a player based on fifty minutes of play, or on how he looks in a photo, which seemed to be the case for many of the 'experts' on here when Belkalem first arrived.... (You know who you are). It may turn out to be the case that Diakite is as poor as so many of you seem to think... but I'll be giving him more than fifty minues before I make up my mind.

I have to echo the above sentiments with the added frustration that unlike the other loanees we have Diakite is probably on quite high wages (although we may not be paying all of his salary) so for him to not only put very little effort in but then compound it with an awful challenge like that makes it doubly bad.

But he is out for three games now so it's up to the other midfielders to grab and retain a place.

I can't believe I'm saying this but with Abdi unlikely to return any time soon, Diakite not looking much cop and both CB & SM doing lots of running but with little end product maybe our best trio would be Toszer (stand out new addition), Merkel (improving with every game) and McGugan.

The former two are high energy players who don't shirk defensive duties so maybe leaving McG with only attacking duties (and hopefully relieving him of his dead ball duties also now Toszer has shown how it's supposed to be done) we could see the best of him?

I hope so because much as I 'like' Murray and Battocho for their application and youth they aren't creative or blessed with vision.

Prior to that he was hopeless, touch was dreadful and distribution even worse. Hopefully Merkel has couple of good games now and we never see him again!
I can't believe that he is on something like £10,000 a week. He can't tackle, he can't pass, he can't dribble, his first touch is worse than Almunias and he looks like he has the completely wrong attitude. Even Hoban, after being out for a year, passed and tackled better than him!

Without doubt the most unpopular player I can ever remember us having. He MUST have something though to have got this far as a pro. The tackle was that of a lazy player who couldn't give a toss about his club or team mates. I'd say this is a big test For Beppe, lets see what he does. If he turns him around, he is a class manager. If he outs him, he's on the right tracks, and if he lets him play again and there is no improvement, he hasn't got what it takes as a boss

If you look at the move just prior to the sending off Murray runs towards the goal then seems to completely run out of ideas. He seems to have lost something from two years ago.

Yeah, good example of what I mean. Don't get me wrong, both able backups and do put in effort but Murray has gone from great prospect to wayward to reasonable.

LOVE to be proved wrong if he now gets a run of games and shines of course.

Some of you need to get a grip here,he is of course going to be a bit rusty not playing week in week out,so his match fitness will not be up there with the team.Only playing 1st team football will improve his fitness, sharpness,an

d will take time for him to gel with his team-mates.Watford fan's are always quick to judge and need a player to aim rubbish at,many did it to Deeney when he 1st came here, and even Danny Graham when he went through a bad spell. It's amazing how many end up with Egg on there faces here!
But Deeney is OURS !
Diakite isn't.
You miss the point completely.Deeney still gets stick, does not do enough,he gets stick via twitter.Murray has as well.Gavin Mahon was the same,Diakite is our player while he is here.Mekel was sent off for a rash challenge on his debut.Diakite has not played hardly a game all season,he needs game time then we will see what he can do when he is fit.Iriney was getting stick yet his pass rate was 95%,you can't judge a player on 50mins of football.

And I think you are missing my point.
Why are we doing QPR favours in trying to make a player out of a liability ?
