Beppe Sannino insists Watford still have to work on being in front despite holding on for Birmingham City win

Watford broke their frustrating habit of squandering leads by holding on to a 1-0 advantage against Birmingham City last night but head coach Beppe Sannino believes the issue is not yet resolved.

The Hornets boss told the Watford Observer on Monday his players need to be cleverer and communicate more if they are to avoid a repeat of matches against Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Leicester City when Watford failed to win after being 2-0 ahead.

Birmingham created little at Vicarage Road but almost nicked an equaliser at the death when a long ball was launched into Watford’s box and Will Packwood narrowly missed with a flicked header.

It was a nervy final few minutes in an otherwise uneventful match and when asked if he was happier with how Watford handled being in front, Sannino’s answer was mixed.

“Yes and no,” he replied, “yes and no.

“I think when you start to feel fear about the result, it means you are also lacking in terms of strength and that means you can concede to the opposition.

“I think we can still improve this side of our game but we need more time to work and until now we haven’t had as much time as I’d have liked.

“It is like a short blanket – if you pull it up, there is a problem at the feet, if you pull it down, there is a problem at the head. We can certainly still improve.”

Never ever left vicarage road so disappointed after winning a game !!
is it just me ? awful game and have no confidence about the games ahead. if you go one nil up and we then go into defensive mode god help us this is the championship.
I understand this is the italian way but what is worrying is the fact he has learnt nothing from last 3 games.....If we carried on playing as we had when we went ahead we could have won all including even (maybe even man city)
Best form of defence is attack...in championship if u turn round and defend you just let the opposing team attack and gain confidence and was just waiting for that to happen tuesday and very nearly did.
Very disappointing we should have stuffed them

We just lack one or maybe 2 attacking players in our 11.

Anya gives us another dimension at wingback at home in a 3 - 5 - 2 while merkel looks off the pace, imagine abdi playing there (or even mcgugan who I'm less fond of but is a goal threat).

Merkel will only get up to speed by playing games and he is starting to look more and more like a quality player albeit slowly.

Toszer is a class act, just pray he stays fit as without him we would be severely deficient in the DMF role.

CB and SM add little to the equation. Both full of running but no vision, strength or presence and Abdi is unlikely to be back any time soon.

That leaves us with Toszer, Merkel and (dare I say it) McGugan when he is fit again.

Even though he has weaknesses maybe, with two hardworking midfielders around him, he can be given free rein to add some spark going forward.

Just don't let him near dead ball situations as Toszer showed on Tuesday he is much better than McGugan on that front, sadly we didn't capitalise from any of them.

Whilst I agree it was not a particularly inspiring game, it was a step in the right direction. Would you rather see an exciting game and lose 3. - 2? In my view there was good reason for the result, we were missing two key players in Anya and Hall. Get them back in contention and we are far more likely to get the results that we all desire. That said I would like to see Park play alongside Troy from the off, with Fessi sitting in just behind them. This I believe is his best position, particularly if he is given a roving roll. At his best he is a game changer, frustrating at times, but I wouldn't want to be without his unpredictable and exciting style of play. Keep the faith .................

Have to agree I think we are not seeing out games because we are trying to defend a lead. We seem to lose shape, defend too deep and hand the impetus over to the opposition. I still believe we have a talented squad but we are no playing to our strengths.

Don't forget we haven't seen Diakite play for any meaningful period, he should offer pace, strength & er.. Pace & strength !..

Mickey Quinn, not so thin says...

Being more cautious and less gung ho is fine but we must retain a goal threat on the break. Without the goal threat its just a question of how long we can hold out. We won vs Brum but it was clear another 10 mins or so and they'd have scored while we were never going to get a second.

Yes, forgot about Diakite but TBH that's easily done with our signings as it seems like the only one we've bagged that was fit to play is Toszer!

I hear Diakite got injured getting on or off the team coach?

Anyway, hopefully Hall and Anya as well as Diakite & Ranegie are available Saturday. Anya & Bellerin should be starting most games (esp at home) as they are the only genuinely quick players I've witnessed at Watford this season.

Park Chu Young is supposedly quick too but I guess whilst we are winning/ drawing it's unlikely to see him figure. Or Ranegie, who joined 6 weeks ago and hasn't played for a single minute - some 4 year contract he's got!
