Hornets captain Manuel Almunia has praised the impact of January signing Daniel Tozser and believes his character can make a difference to the rest of Watford’s season.

Tozser has started the Golden Boys’ last two matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Leicester City and has looked assured in defensive midfield.

The 29-year-old, who captained a successful Genk side during a two-year spell there, is on loan at Vicarage Road until the end of the season and Almunia says the Hungarian has settled in well.

“I like Daniel, I like him,” said the Hornets keeper.

“He does his duty very well for the team, he does the job of holding midfielder very well.

“He is strong, he’s got quality, he’s aggressive, he talks a lot – which is important for us – he is a good signing. We are very happy with him.”

The Spaniard has previously suggested Watford lack personalities in the squad and when asked if Tozser could add some experience to the team, Almunia replied: “Yes, because we need characters.

“Every team needs characters. The Championship is hard so we need players that encourage each other to do well.

“We need everybody to be leaders on the pitch and if you have leaders with a bit of quality you will be at the top.”

He is obviously impressing Almunia and us fans so far; so lets hope he continues to do so!

If he carries on as he has started, we should pull out the stops to sign him permanently in the Summer, and if we do, we should also consider him as club captain material, as an outfield player is probably better than a GK for the job IMO.

On his brief showing thus far it is hard to argue against him being signed permanently. He has done more than steady the ship as a replacement for Hoggy. He has taken that position and already made it his own. With Abdi sadly almost certainly out for the rest of the season, Tozser has the attributes to become captain. Definitely one of Nani's better signings!

We do need everyone to be leaders on the pitch... in terms of taking responsibility for their performance, but not standing around pointing, like Iriney did. The goalkeeper and captain should be the only ones pointing. Having your goalkeeper as captain creates a leadership void in midfield, that's the trouble.

Good to hear the current captain speak so highly of him, as others have mentioned this guy seems a natural leader and I'm hoping he stays beyond the summer.

Apparently he has already bought a place to live in the area so that might be an indicator of his intentions?

Merkel too is someone I hope we keep, not seen that much of him but the little I have he has impressed with his work rate and eagerness to be involved - we need more of this type of player.
