Watford travelled to Molineux for an FA Cup fifth round tie with first division Wolverhampton Wanderers.
With the match goalless and 11 minutes remaining, Wolves lost substitute John McAlle with a boken leg 20 seconds after his introduction.
Malcolm Poskett took advantage to score twice - the first deflecting in off Wolves defender Geoff Palmer - and Luther Blissett added a third in injury time as the Hornets ran out comfortable victors.
Martin Patching, captain for the day from central midfield, had been signed from Wolves for £100,000 two months earlier.
