AUDIO: Beppe Sannino explains why he opted for Marco Cassetti rather Fitz Hall at Leicester City

This Is Local London: Picture: Action Images Picture: Action Images

Watford’s decision not to start Fitz Hall at Leicester City was because of the player’s fitness, tactics and an interest in seeing Marco Cassetti at centre half, according to their head coach.

Hall has made a noticeable improvement to the Hornets defensively when he has been selected this season.

After a stellar display against Brighton & Hove Albion last Saturday, when the Hornets kept a clean sheet after shipping eight goals in the previous two matches, many expected Hall to start, barring injury.

It was confirmed before and after the match that Hall wasn’t carrying an injury but Sannino suggested the experienced centre half may not have been 100 per cent fit when asked why the 33-year-old did not start.

He said: “Fitz worked a lot in the last match against Brighton and I was interested to see Cassetti play in this position. I think he did well today.”

When asked if Hall, who has struggled with injuries in the past, found it difficult to play three games in eight days, Sannino replied: “I have to choose XI players; I would like to choose more on a match-day.

“It was a decision I made taking everything into consideration; the tactics, the games and that we had another game on Tuesday and again on Saturday – and again on Tuesday.”

You can hear Sannino's post Leicester City press conference below.

A) cassetti played well
B) hall needs to be nurtured
C) hall on the pitch for equaliser anyway

We should not need explanations , beppe is improving things and that works for me

You comment about Hall needs to be nurtured.is pathetic. He is 33 & played premiership football.
Why he keeps bringing forest off & keeping Deeney on is anyone's guess (not saying Deeney is playing that bad, just looks Knackered)

Whilst I have never been a great Doyley fan, this is a bit harsh. He has been and still is a great servant to the club and has made many man of the match appearances. Would not get in my first 11, but still a good player to have in our squad.

Does the last line mean you believe what you're saying, or you're saying it for a laugh?

His reading of the game, anticipation and pace have improved a million-fold since Zola took over. Completely objectively, he's turned into an extremely good centre-half.

You're entitled to your opinion, but regrettably it shows you up as a 'fan' with no real understanding of the game.

Doyley, nosworthy, diaketi, park, have all played premiership is that a prerequisite (look it up) of selection?

Hall was injured most of last season which helped derail our promotion push. We have more fit centre halves available now hence he can and should be nurtured. Look at his average appearances per season over his whole career and it may enlighten you

I would have started him, but having watched cassetti's performance I think selection was fine.

Taking foresteiri off was negative but that's the manager's prerogative (look it up)

Deeney holds the ball up, wins defensive headers and does what he is asked, important in seeing out a game of football.

Was Hall actually unfit? No sign on the Football League Show of Eksrand making a mistake and then cluatering into Manu, as reported on Sky Sports News. Is Ekstrand the best option? That said, how many of us would have settled for a draw before the game. Awful that we could not have held out for longer following the reported clattering of Manu after Eksrand made a mistake and the recovered but then went into Manu that meant more added time. A good result in retrospect though. Hope that both Brentford and Orient go up so more local away games. Charlton look doomed but I shall be there when we play them.

Why does Cassetti continue to be picked ahead of other better, quicker and stronger defenders? IMO it is because he is multi-lingual and is able to convey the Manager's instructions to players on the pitch. Beppe and his whole coaching staff speak Italian - Alec is the only English speaker off the pitch and someone has to be the Manager's messenger on it!

Traveling to Leicester I feared the worst but I came away proud to be a Hornet. The decision to play Cassetti at centre half was inspired. He is one of our most experienced players and reads the game perfectly. Shame we could not hold out for the extra couple of minutes but there were some tired bodies out there at the end. Despite their possession we made Leicester look ordinary - ok they may have had an off day but I still think they will walk the league this year. Agree entirely that Fitz needs to be nurtured but fully expect him to start on Tuesday with perhaps two or three other changes. The next 3 games could easily yield 9 points if we can carry on with the commitment & energy shown in recent games.

DEFENDING A 2 GOAL LEAD

We have no outfield midfield captain to ensure we maintain 2 players up field when we are under attack in our half ===========if you don't--- u get 9 or 10 opposition players camped in your half.
Consequently when its hoofed up field we get it straight back and so we stonewall defend most of the 2nd half, besides the fact that its overcrowded in front of our penalty area which means we get in each others way --- so then we cant pass the ball out and build an attack .
Still proud of the effort the team put in week after week , we are so capable of better results. We have been 2 goals up against 3 quality teams recently.

If Beppe wants to know what Cassetti is like at Centre half I would be prepared to give him my honest assessment!
Not sure about Ekstrand, he seemed to back away from Dishwaters strike and he does make mistakes. We need to try and play football in the last 20 mins and not panic into giving possesion away. If we get that right theres no-one to fear in the championship. Would love to see Hoban back, Please dont sub Fessi, give him 90 mins.

Cassetti gave the ball away a few times in the first 10 minutes or so but then to be fair settled OK. I would play Hall at CB not only because of his defending but also his ability to organise the defence.
For me I would play Cassetti at wing back instead of Faoroni. If not Cassetti I would play Anya and Pudil as wing backs. Hopefully almost spoilt for choice in that position!

If someone tries to say Lloyd Doyley doesn't deserve to be a part of this squad then I feel so sorry for their complete lack of football knowledge! He won't get you goals, he won't get you assists! What he will do however is beat any man in this league in a one on one situation and is leaps ahead of defending shown by players such as Ekstrand and Angella whose one on one defending is shockingly worrying! Arguing is pointless as I am right and you are wrong! I'm a fan of Angella and Ekstrand as footballers but both (especially the former) has cost us points this year

C) hall on the pitch for equaliser anyway

We should not need explanations , beppe is improving things and that works for me
Wheres your GREAT Lloyd Doyley now VoR??? Seems to have dropped down the pecking order a tad..apparently he's just behind the tea lady now.. At last (hopefully) we have at last got a manager that sees that clown for what he is...Record number of thumbs down please clappers..

What goes on this site is pretty symptomatic of where we are in the UK at the moment. Some people are awake confronting reality, many others are not strong enough and live their life in self-denial with the need to band together tribe like! More people are waking up, seeing reality, confronting it and deal with the responsibility that goes with it.

On the positive side, performances against man city for 45 mins was spectacular could have been 4-0 at half time. I think that’s Man city’s blip is a bit down to their game with Watford, it surprised City by showing they believed the media hype of invincibility. Watford undid them for 45 minutes. It’s all about confidence!

Likewise the game against Forest more or less the same, on the positive side it was a wake up moment for the team and in a perverse way made them better and more confident moving on to Brighton & Leicester.

Yesterday’s performance was superb, I have thought for some time Watford on their day are the best team and most talented squad in the championship. The only thing lacking is that killer instinct of playing to the last minute – Mourhino style. I think it will come.

We were undone by two lapses of concentration against Leicester, just before half time and in the 94th minute, other than that the team was solid and impressive.

My only criticism of Bepe is to continue to take Fez off which hasn’t worked against Man city, Forrest or Leicester. In terms of ability frankly, I think Watford were more impressive than Leicester on the back of a 9 streak of winning games, at home and before 25, ooo fanatical supporters.

For the first time in two seasons especially yesterday, Watford look like a team, Zola’s policy of constantly making massive changes i.e. 5 or 6 player changes in so many games was suicidal and cost cost us dear! There was no stability, it undermined morale and confidence.

The team is now gelling and it shows. I still have my doubts about Faraoni and Cassetti, let’s wait and see what happens for the rest of the season, it could be interesting!

Hall should have played from the start and Cassetti on the bench. We needed a wise cool head especially during the second half onslaught - very strange decision all round.
Ekstrand and Angela had opportunities to hoof the ball out of the ground while Battochio was injured but they chose to keep in play - ultimately cost us 2 points.l

At last you have written something without resorting to politicised abuse of either individuals or nationalities... And you know what, I agree with you on pretty much all you've said, though the first para was pointless.

The team is turning things around. It may take a while to fully 'manage the game' as Betty used to say... But I am sure we will get there.

Hall was on the pitch when Leicester scored their second.!! So don't know what your on about mate.
Cassetti did well playing and didn't let us down.
Also he did some outrageous ball juggling to bamboozle three Leicester players right in front of the watford fans, if you were there you would of seen it.
Trouble with these forums is that people can make uninformed opinions and are full of their importance.

The second paragraph was a bit whacky but Roger's posts are always entertaining. Much better than the silly name calling that has become prevalent on here.

It cant be for his effectiveness on the pitch. Agree with you 100% Johnny. Honestly think we wd play better with 10 men.Hes a liability.
