FA transfer Watford defender Gabriele Angella's suspension to Fitz Hall after refereeing mistake at Bournemouth

The FA has transferred the red card and one-match suspension handed to Watford defender Gabriele Angella at Bournemouth on Saturday to Fitz Hall.

Angella was sent off after the officials thought the Italian, rather than Hall, had pulled back the shirt of Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban.

The Hornets challenged the decision and today the FA upheld their appeal on the basis of mistaken identity.

Watford also lodged a second appeal against Hall's ban but the club was unsuccessful.

Hall will now miss the Hornets' FA Cup fourth round trip to Manchester City on Saturday.

It can't be a red card because Ekstrand was a covering defender. I suppose the FA would have found it slightly two embarrassing to admit just how inept the officials were. 1) The referee didn't see it 2) The linesman was sure he did see it but wasn't sure who had done it 3) Neither apparently saw the covering defender.

Typical FA...I recall somebody (I believe ex FA bigwig) saying on 606 today that sorry is the hardest word in Football...well it is obvious that it is in the FA's case as they are wrong on so many levels here. Just for once it would be nice to see some humility and admission that they made a mistake and apologise. I would like to see the next defender who tugs the shirt of an attacker when a corner is taken and is going up for a header given a Red card. I am incensed at this, but we shouldn't expect anything less from the people responsible for our beautiful game. FA - Pah!!!

Agreed. Also quashes my "legal" argument yesterday that said that this was very unlikely! Still can't see how it could be transferred to Hall. A technical decision like this could surely only be made on the day. It means that it must have been judged to be a case of mistaken identity and I suppose Hall does look very similar to Angella.......the officials' eyesight must be worse than I thought.

Downright ridiculous decision . They really are joke. It was just about a yellow, let alone a red. Halls tackle for the second (totally unjustified pen) too was excellent really good timing of a tackle in the box.
I think we had better play to a Gianfranco plan on saturday. lets just come out with little injuries i reckon.

Looks as if Forest are going to get Danny Graham . Can we stop him playing against us?

SuperHorn,

The injustice will bring lots of comments and rightly so.

Logic is missing. They don't know who did it, but having seen the footage they decide it is best not to lose face and be in denial. Enough players in front of Fitz to fill a stretched limo.

Fitz needs to put his goods on display to get a contract anywhere to earn a living. In that respect they have well and truly kicked him in the nads. As long as they take their counsel's opinion type fee for watching 2 mins of footage, I guess they could not give a sh1t.

The FA never fails to let the game of football down. This would be a sacking offence for the two idiot officials involved in any other business. Where is their punishment? Oh yes, there isn't one.
Our chance to hold Man City to a 1-1 draw and thrash them at Vicarage Road now somewhat reduced.
I didn't know Fitz Hall's nickname at Palace was "one -size". Quite clever.

What a complete and utter cop out. Agree with most of the posters that Hall was being covered by other defenders, so a yellow card at most. Another incompetent decision will go unpunished - we never see refs or linos suspended or fined for horrendous c*ck ups like this. They may have a very difficult job and we all make mistakes - but how on earth could Angella and Fitz have been mistaken for one another? Fitz is twice as big as anyone else on the pitch for goodness sake! FA should publish the results of officials' regular eye tests which I assume they must have........don't they?

Milford Styles Attwell & Boyeson were having a drink and discuss their refereeing.

Milford, I had this game at Luton and already booked the Luton kid - I hadn't got a sccobie what to do as I wanted to give him another yellow but the other guy the Watford captain ain't been booked. Easy I sent them both off. Poor sod never got to play as skipper in the FA Cup Final.

Then Liverpool were losing at Watford and 3 mins to go what could I do. Then Rushie chases a lost cause out of the area. He only goes and dives over the keeper. Magic and then Liverpool go on to win the double.

Styles - I kept sending Watford's skipper off. I even sent off Helguson as he said please ref your spoiling the game. Priceless.

Attwell - I was at Watford level with their penalty spot and the lino tells me there was a goal. Get to see the 4th official and he tells me I forked up Sky were laughing like crazy. I got away with that as I just blamed the lino.

Boyeson - My Watford moment. I can go better than that. I didn't see a pen, waved play on, the lino said someone tugged a shirt. I give a pen. I sent the wrong guy off and when it gets to his appeal - he is cleared but I got the guy that pulled the shirt anyway. My lino hadn't a clue and neither had I what happened.

10 mins later a player loses the ball and takes a swan dive and quick as a flash I have my whistle in my mouth for a penalty. I think shall I or shan't I send the keeper off. Good job I didn't - nothing to do with him either.

The others pour their drinks over his head and call him a soft sh1te for bottling it.

Why isnt an independent review system in place for these appeals? Why are the FA able to review this themselves and make these decision's? Surely there is an element to not give the correct decision to protect the officials. However all this does is allow the offending ref to get away with it and ref another game next week. These officials should never be allowed to officiate at this level and be suspended for such errors.
If they couldnt see it clearly, it should never have been a sending off or a pen for that matter. More supporting evidence for video refs to be involved.

Perhaps not for this week at Man City, but I reckon Angella could do a brilliant job in the holding midfield position. It's not as if we don't have enough centre backs either. He can play, tackle head, and drive forward with the ball and can strike a ball. I think that would be very interesting and he is a big lad to mess with.

What a surprise. The FA not willing to undermine their precious officials twice for the same incident. If Hall had been sent off originally I am sure the red card would have been overturned upon appeal.

I think your selection would work fine against Man City: a fully capable central defender in front of the back three. Your team would then reflect my 3-3-3-1 suggestion, but with Casseti in the back three and Nosworthy in the middle.

we should be appeal that as Fitz was the one adjudged to have tripped Pugh for the 2nd penalty and he has now been given a red card for the first one, that logically this incident could not have happened as he shouldnt have been on the pitch. Therefore we should of course be awarded the match.

The FA are probably trying to punish us for appealing in the first place with this nonsense.

Quality!!

Slightly off subject, for which I apologise, but one or two older readers may be interested to learn that Kevin Miller, mentioned above a few times, is still playing regularly at a decent level. A few weeks short of his 45th birthday he keeps goal for Bodmin Town, back in his native Cornwall. He was never exactly small but has bulked out somewhat with the passage of time. I've seen him a few times this season and on each occasion he's delivered a goalkeeping masterclass. His kicking and general distribution remain good, his handling outstanding, his positioning as sound as ever and he calls all the defensive plays for a young and not terribly impressive back four. He doesn't do a lot of diving and on the rare occasion he does hit the ground, it takes him a while to get up again. He left Watford 16 years ago now but remains a joy to watch. If ever you're down that way, check out the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League fixtures - but don't leave it too long!
