Watford took full advantage of a club in disarray, beating managerless Derby County 6-1 on their way to promotion from the second division in what Jack Steggles of the Daily Mirror described as "the most one-sided game I can recall watching".

Gerry Armstrong scored twice in the opening quarter-hour - both from Ross Jenkins knock-downs - and Luther Blissett made it an unflattering 3-0 at the break.

Ian Bolton and John Barnes added a goal apiece before Paul Emerson scored from Derby's only attack of the night. A minute later, substitute Nigel Callaghan rounded off the scoring.
