Watford midfielder Cristian Battocchio should join Italian side Padova in the next few days, according to his agent.

Battocchio has been linked with a return to Italy in the last week and his agent yesterday confirmed the 21-year-old was bound for the city of Padua.

Claudio Vagheggi was quoted by Padovasport.tv as saying Battocchio would be joining Padova in "a matter of days".

Vagheggi said the deal had not been officially formalised but that Battocchio had rejected other clubs in favour of joining the Serie B strugglers on loan until June.

Battocchio has been in the Hornets' 18-man match-day squad for all of the Hornets games this season except for one.

The Argentine-born midfielder has made six Championship starts and nine substitute appearances this season, being an unused sub on eight occasions.

The Italy Under-21 international has also started all five of the Golden Boys' League Cup and FA Cup ties.

However, he has been behind Lewis McGugan and Sean Murray in the pecking order for most of this season and last season's Watford Observer Player of the Year, Almen Abdi, returned midweek after missing most of the season through injury.

The club may also decide to play new signing Alexander Merkel further forward once he returns from suspension if the club do land another holding midfielder as planned.

Watford's head coach Beppe Sannino refused to be drawn on the prospect of Battocchio leaving when asked on Monday, stating he was "deaf" to the reports.

I think he is a terrific little player and will be sorry to see him go because I think he should start more often.
However he does need to play and be given the chance to develop so good luck to the lad and I look forward to seeing him back next year.
In a couple of years he could be quite a valuable player in every respect.
If Abdi has a further set back which is perfectly possible with his sort of injury, I hope we don't regret letting him go.

Well it looks like the new man is having a clear out??? For all his running around on Tuesday he never really shone and his shooting boots have long left him. He is still young and maybe the Italian style of football will suit him better than the energetic, blood and guts of the championship! Good luck to hiim now lets get the right players in for the style of football the new man wants to play.....

I don't really get all the negativity towards McGugan. I think he probably sees more of the ball than any other player because he wants the ball. Perhaps if our forward players made better runs he would have an option to pass it forward quickly instead of trying to retain possession and having to go sideways or backwards. I do think his crossing needs to improve but at least he gets into shooting positions!

He's good if not the best player we have, but: Involved in both goals - made one scored the other - Tues. You'd have thought the OTT criticism could die down a bit.

He has loads of potential and talent, but doesn't boss the midfield. He will benefit from being on loan, so good luck to him. At the moment he's not effective enough in the Championship with the required pace and physicality. Good luck to him, hopefully he'll come back better and still be one for the future.

Do you not think the Italian Seria B is not going to be the same! It is just as difficult to get out of and just as challenging.

It was a harsh comment. I always found him a player to get stuck in, find space, make good runs and have an eye for goal.
I have seen him in the Italy u21 on a few occasions and looked outstanding and very highly rated.
Be a shame to see him go, hope he does well and is back next season.

Strange that Mcgugan gets so much criticism for his shooting given that he is probably the only player to actually score from outside the box this season. At least he gets into position to shoot, unlike the rest of our players at the moment. Maybe Abdi will also be able to weigh in with a couple of long rangers if he is playing but compared to last season this is another part of our play that has declined.

I happen to think McGugan is one of our most talented players. He CAN run into good spaces, play defence splitting passes and score great free kicks. He can only do this every so often. What he really needs is a huge kick up the a***. Maybe dropping him might be a test of his character. My old Sunday league manager used to sub anyone who didn't chase back when losing the ball...just an idea, Beppe

I have seen him in the Italy u21 on a few occasions and looked outstanding and very highly rated.
Be a shame to see him go, hope he does well and is back next season.
All I am saying is that the style of play will suit him . Championship football is all about winning and not necessarily playing attractive football. Defend well and take your opportunities in front of goal...our defence is getting better but we cannot hit a barn door!!!!

He was never a Billy Davies type player IMO. Always a strange move I felt. One things for sure, if Mata can't get a game then I doubt Chalobah will. The lad has talent, but lacks experience and no pace, not that the latter stopped Lampard being a very good player.
Wouldn't want him back as prefer to develop our own, but appreciate his time with us last season; always gave 100% commitment. Could see Brendan Rogers being interested.

I do think his crossing needs to improve but at least he gets into shooting positions!
Yes he gets in to shooting positions but keeps firing wide and won't pass the ball. His free kicks are a4se.
If you were there the other night Abdi did more in the 10 mins he was on than Mcgugan did in 80?

I echo this comment. Talented and classy but needs regular football. One of our best last season and it would be shame if the Batch does not come back. Iwould like to see some of the young British professionals going out on short term loans to Italy/ Spain etc.for technical experience. Anya obviously got his career back on track that way and broadens mind as well as body. Farm ing them out to lower leagues does not always improve players. Luv the Horns!

I thought Reece had gone already metaphorically. Sannino has stated he didn't want too many players at the club so there may be one or two more who go on loan. With the number of British players in the match day squad controlled, some of the overseas one's might go e.g Belkalem, who is now behind four or five others. See 3 Seria A clubs interested in Faraoni, I hope he doesn't go just as he seems to be finding his feet in the Championship.

Sannino has stated that Doyley is the spirit of the club or words to that effect, so I think that is unlikely. I hope he stays as he is one of the best one on one defenders we have. Does alot of the graft and unseen stuff. He is a 7/10 most games.
