Beppe Sannino believes Watford can be more dangerous by playing with more passion and more forward passes

Watford head coach Beppe Sannino believes his team can score more goals by playing with more passion and more forward passes.

The Hornets had 19 shots at goal in the 1-0 defeat to Reading on Saturday and created a handful of excellent chances but were unable to find the net.

Speaking after the match, Sannino said his team can help their strikers by playing with more urgency but admitted there is a balance to be struck.

"I would like to see my team play with more passion and to play forward more," explained Sannino.

"If we do that we will allow the strikers to be more dangerous in the box - we have to start from the back and I know we have to work on that.

"I have to find the right balance to allow our best players to play forwards and be backed by the team while avoiding the problems we have had in the past in conceding a lot of goals."

Watford started the match against Reading in a 3-5-2 formation but Sannino made his team more attacking in the second half as the Hornets moved into a 4-3-3 and even 4-2-4 at times.

Fernando Forestieri came on for Hector Bellerin shortly after the break, joining Diego Fabbrini and Troy Deeney in a front three and Sannino was pleased with the Argentine's impact.

"When Forestieri came on you saw we were much more dangerous going forward but it was also the right balance between the defence and the attack – I am constantly searching for the right balance," Sannino said.

"I have always said I don’t want my team to be scared of anyone, I want my team to be ready to face any opposition.

"I think Fabbrini and Forestieri are very good when they play one versus one but I don’t like to make many changes during the game.

"I want my team to have an identity and then during a game you can make changes but the starting point is to have a clear identity."

Watford have only won one of their last eight home matches and are now 15th in the Championship table.

The Hornets return to Vicarage Road on Tuesday night to take on Bristol City in an FA Cup third round replay and Sannino is pleased with the quick turnaround.

"In the second half against Reading we deserved at least one goal because we had lots and lots of chances but that is the result, I have to accept the result," he continued.

"We have the opportunity to turn over the page quickly because we have another game on Tuesday which is good because we have the chance to play again in a short time and from tomorrow (Sunday) we can start to think about that game."

Saturday was very similar to the Zola regime, ie just playing for 45 minutes!

Beppe is more defensive than Zola by streets, hence the taking off of Bellerin when he was clearly the better of the two wing backs!

And why he did not take off the ineffective Merkel and to bring on Battochio earlier, I will never know!

First impressions of Merkel were not good, and I do not think we will not miss him as we beat both Bristol City and Bournemouth this week?

Bellerin played well but was not better than Pudil, no way. The move should have been to take off Lloyd and move Bellerin to fullback. HB can pass, is more comfortable with the ball at his feet than Lloyd. His pass to pick out Deeney who fluffed the header, was the pass of the game.
At least Beppe has JE & GA bringing the ball out more which is a must with 3 at the back and something we didn't do under GFZ. Getting Hoban back will be a big plus as of course will be Abdi, but I think we are now looking to lay the foundation for another go next season.

Of course Bellerin was better than Pudil, as you go on to demonstrate with your comments.

And to prove my point point further, who do you think will make way for the return of Anya as wing back tomorrow?

Pudil of course! And with Anya and Bellerin as wing backs we look a completely different team going forward.

I do not dislike Pudil, but he does not possess the vision or the pace of Anya and Bellerin, and will always be a back up player in my mind?

It just shows me how different people see different things. I like Bellerin a lot ,but thought he was dreadful on Saturday . I thought Forestieri was poor too!
Our defence is good, but why wont Almunia come off his line for crosses more?
I think our real problem is in the midfield as they all seem to take an age to collect the ball, think, and pass. The opposition can always seem to get back in position before the midfield have released it, but what do I know?

Perhaps because Merkel didnt lost possession or misplaces his passes whereas Battochio did both. I like Battochio but he was very poor on Saturday.

Mickey Quinn, not so thin says...

He's saying all the right things - now its time to start getting the right results too.

Why do our shots stats look good but our goals stats so bad ? Because McG is in the side ! As far as he is concerned the only tactic is for the team to pass to him so he can complete the move by having yet another wasted shot from 25 yards. Drop him and push Merkin forward when he's back...

Really?? Merkel was one of, if not the best player on the park. He played more passes and made more tackles than anyone else on both sides, and after a shaky start, displayed lots of quality. He is clearly not match sharp, and a bit too eager to impress with a couple of tackles, and should have had a second yellow earlier in the game. Considering he was a creative player playing in the hole, he did a very fine job. Can’t say I have seen Boateng play, but I’m dreaming that he is as good as Abdi and Merkel, and will form a midfield dream team for the rest of the season.

Time will tell but I'm convinced you're wrong about Merkel. Considering it was his first game for a while, in a new country, playing out of position I thought he looked promising. He'll play alongside Abdi when they're both fit and available.

For someone who hadn't played for nearly a year and on his debut + being played out of position I thought Merkel was excellent, rash challenge aside.

He worked his socks off and made Murray and McGugan look pedestrian and very ordinary.

We all know what we need and that's an experienced, strong DMF & a proper support striker to complement Deeney/Ranegie.

Off the pitch things are MASSIVELY better than before the Pozzos came along, on it we are rebuilding (losing Abdi, Chalobah, Vydra & Hogg would hurt ANY team) but the foundations are in place, just need the finishing touches.

longcliffe: No good having lots of talent at our disposal if it doesn't gel/fit and no one was laughing at the PO Semi Final - but that was last season and we've moved on, so should you.

Anyone can make short passes wide and backwards as Merkel did! of course it is clean and neat, but no forward progression.

Iriney and Connor Smith could have played the same role with such implicity, but none of these compare to the impressive Thorne who we missed badly.

Merkel will probably come good later on when he settles in properly, but as for Saturday, I still maintain that he was not better then the jobs done by Smith and Ireney.

Personally speaking, Merkel was a class above anyone else in the midfield,
always looked to receive the ball, was always in space and when he had the ball he had no one to give it to because no one wanted it, hence the frustration of getting sent off.

I assume GS stuck with 352 (more like 532 lately) because it was what he thought the team were comfortable with?

In which case I really hope he has the smarts to switch to 433 or even the dreaded 442 as 352 does NOT work with the players we have and the ease with which it's exploited by any experienced manager has left us with an awful home record.

We looked much better defensively AND in attack when 433, it suits our personnel.

Well and good saying we need xyz to the media but he has to actually DO something to make that a reality!

I cannot believe all the negativity on here. You have an untold amount of players to call from through your owners two clubs. You had all those players last season and you could not beat Palace!!!
You have had your chance, and just think how you all laughed in play-off semi final against Leicester. How things have changed, look at the league table. Mugs
Why don't you try the Lonely Hearts column.

More dangerous going forward Mr Sannino??? Could i make the outrageous suggestion of NOT setting OUR team up with an 8 man defence!! A back 3 with 2 wing backs obviously instructed not to cross the halfway line and 2 midfielders sitting deep plus the keeper makes EIGHT!! No surprise Fabrini and Deeney are feeding off scraps!! No link play between the back 8 and the isolated 2 apart from a very energetic Sean Murray who im afraid had a stinker against Reading..And all this against a poor, struggling Reading side who were there for the taking...Fair enough against QPR or even away against the top sides, but NOT against teams we are perfectly capable of wiping the floor with!! Now I just wanna make sure i get plenty of thumbs down from all the armchair experts...I hope Sannino turns out to be the messiah we are all dreaming of and im sure he will be given al the time needed to make his mark...BUT.....I seriously have to question the judgement of any coach/manager that considers Doyley to be a better bet in a back 3 than either Fitz Hall or Nyron Noseworthy and a better right back when we are one down and chasing the game than Hector Bellerin...

For Gods sake give him time. So your brilliant in your job on your first day then!!

It would be silly to write off Merkel after one game. If you look at the stats from the game against Reading he completed more passes than any other Watford player and showed some very good touches. It was sad to see him sent off for a silly lunge because we will now miss him for a few games when he really needed to be playing and building his match fitness.
The second half against Reading was a major improvement on the first and I agree with Beppe that the players need to show more passion. However that cannot disguise the fact that our finishing is woeful. Hunger and desire are important attributes for any footballer but we also need people who can put the ball in the net on a regular basis. We need more cover up front now,
