GARETH Ainsworth said he won't walk away from the challenge of improving Wanderers' precarious league position, despite admitting to looking nervously over his shoulder at the teams behind him.

For the first time supporters are questioning Ainsworth's role at the club in the wake of a dire performance in a 3-0 home defeat by AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

Boos rang out around Adams Park as defeat left Wanderers just four points away from the dreaded bottom two, with Blues winless in front of their own fans in eight games.

They've sunk down the table after only managing one win in their last 11 - and while Ainsworth admits he's now looking at the teams around Blues instead of those at the top end, he said he's up for the fight in taking them away from danger.

He said: "I have never shirked a challenge, on or off the pitch, in my life and I never will.

"I'm in a really upbeat mood and looking forward to the next game, but I always would be - there's no other way Gareth Ainsworth lives his life. I will be like that for the rest of my days.

"We need strong minds and strong characters now. I want to start making my way away from the bottom of the table and back into the middle, and see where we can go from there.

"The fans were frustrated on Saturday and I totally understand it. They are entitled to everything."

Ainsworth added: "We don't want to get sucked into a relegation battle like we were last year. We don't want to be in the 20s positions. It wasn't nice last year checking different permutations of what would happen every week.

"Of course you look over your shoulder but we also look higher at where three points would take us, where six points would take us, where the two games in hand would take us. The answer to that is back to mid table, which is a great position for Wycombe Wanderers to be in."
