Cristian Battocchio's display at Bristol City shows Beppe Sannino has 'extraordinary guys' at Watford

This Is Local London: Picture: Holly Cant Picture: Holly Cant

Cristian Battocchio's display at left wing back against Bristol City was an indication that Beppe Sannino has a group of "extraordinary guys", according to the Hornets' head coach.

Injuries to Ikechi Anya and Daniel Pudil, plus Hector Bellerin's ineligibility, meant Sannino was forced to use Battocchio at left wing back; a position he has not played before.

When Marco Cassetti - who could be considered the Hornets only other recognised wing back - was forced off injured at half time, Sannino brought on Connor Smith, who was a forward and attacking midfielder during youth football, at right wing back.

When asked about Battocchio's display, Sannino replied: "It makes me aware – and you aware – that I have extraordinary guys.

"I also have to praise Connor Smith because those two players had to play in positions they have never played before. So I am happy [with them]."

Let's get the best side out for the replay. Experiments are not needed. A super match against Man. City or a chance to go further against Blackburn? OK it will be City.

neil-bs did you read the article? Battochio was playing wing back due to injuries to other players, not as an 'experiment'.

You've got 8 of the starting 11 that came within one goal of automatic promotion last season mate. Now it's up to you to get them playing again :-)

Yes we have got some extraordinary guys in the squad but we need a few additions if we really want to mount a serious challenge for the play off's. I still reckon we need a proven striker and another wing back in the squad. Might be best if we also changed the 3-5-2 formation when we come up against Forest because they showed against the West Ham Youth team that they've got it well and truly sussed out.
If we can get past Bristol City in the cup I would like to see a commitment from Beppe that he will put out the strongest team available for the Man City game. It's an expensive day out for most fans and a long way to go if we're not serious about giving it a proper crack.

Whilst Battocchio wasn't the best at covering back in his role on Saturday he did well throughout the 90 minutes. Unfortunately the goal did come from down his side of the pitch but I won't hold a grudge. We do have good players but the task is to get them competing as a team. The additions of Merkel and Ranegie add more depth/options.

With so many wingbacks out with injury for Saturday I did expect a change in formation, however, my guess is Sannino has been working mainly with a 3-5-2 in his short time here. He also said he would evalute if any signings were needed after this game and I'd suggest at least one more wingback.

The replay, and future games, will be a different story with players returning to action. We should take the replay as any other game though and not be thinking of another day out in Manchester. This will be Sannino's first Saturday/Tuesday fixture I'd expect a couple of changes.

With Doyley being able to play at both right and left back, I was surprised he didnt start or come on in the wing back role.
His contract runs out at the end of the season, maybe this is the end for him? Hope not.

Any more crazy than Battochio or Connor Smith at wing back?

Doyley at wing back in an injury crisis where we are playing midfielders in that position..

CRAZY! lol

We must all understand that we won't get "PROVEN" players/managers from our owners. It's just not their business style.

Whether a player is proven or not is irrelevant and meaningless. When he joined us, Nathan Ellington was a proven striker.

Thought I had already covered this on another thread.

Rule 15f FA a Cup

f.All players must have been eligible to play in the original tie in order to play in a replayed or postponed match; however a player who has been suspended according to the disciplinary procedures under the Rules of The Association may play in a postponed or replayed match after the term of his suspension has expired.

We have:
1) Anya
2) Pudil
3) Faraoni
4) Bellerin
5) Cassetti

All natural wingbacks, plus apparently Doyley, Battochio, Smith... who can cover.

You want ANOTHER wingback? Computer says no.
