Quotes such as "we may never play fantastic football but it will be practical" and "one swallow doesn't make the summer" are not comments you would necessarily expect from a manager who has just ended a ten-match winless run with a 4-0 victory in his first home game, but Beppe Sannino appears to be a level-headed man.

Watford were excellent during the resounding win against Millwall at Vicarage Road yesterday; a result which ended their run of five consecutive home defeats.

But speaking to the press after the match, Sannino was quick to highlight that Millwall were reduced to ten men inside the opening nine minutes and that he needs more time before he knows what style of play he will be able to implement.

Speaking through translator Marco Cesarini, who is Watford's head of medical, Sannino said: "It is not the one bird which makes the spring time. Or one swallow doesn't make the summer. So it is not about this one result, we need more results before it will allow me to know which team we will be."

He continued: "As I said before, I am not a magician. I am an honest worker and I try to always give my players a worker's mentality where there is a sufferance in the game but then I hope after the game, they can smile like they did today.

"It is only through the work that we can improve and get the results."

One of the most noticeable improvements to Watford's performance yesterday, compared to much of this season, was the tempo of their passing and attacking play.

When that point was raised, Sannino replied: "I think you could see from the outside and you are doing your job - so I think you are competent to judge.

"What you saw was that we ran with the ball. We may never play fantastic football but it will be practical. There will be a lot of running, a lot of pressure and if we understand this, then we will move a step forward."

Sannino expects his players to work hard with the ball and out of possession and that has been evident in his first two matches in charge following the resignation of Gianfranco Zola.

Having failed to score in their previous four matches, such an impressive attacking display is likely to boost the confidence of the Hornets players at Vicarage Road, even playing against ten men.

But the main thing Sannino took from the match was the Golden Boys' defensive organisation.

He said: "In my football, you score with ten men and you defend with ten men so it is not only the strikers who I expect to score. We must also not just expect our defenders to defend - we work as a team. If we have that mentality then we will have more chances in an offensive way. If we want to take something from today, it is that even if we played with one more man, we were always organised."
