CHRIS Powell heaped plaudits on both players and fans after yesterday’s 3-2 win over Brighton on Boxing Day by claiming it felt like old Charlton again.

The Addicks found themselves behind to a 22nd minute Leonardo Ulloa strike but responded well with as Lawrie Wilson finished off a quick break to equalise 10 minutes later.

Another smart Wilson finish after the break and a beautiful Yann Kermorgant free-kick made it 3-1 before Ulloa’s late consolation set up a nervy finale.

It was Charlton’s first win at home for a month and means they’re four points clear of the relegation zone with Powell pleased to add a win to his presents from Santa this year.

“He brought me a coat, some new shoes and now three points and three goals for the first time this season so I am really pleased for the player and fans,” said the Valley chief.

“I thought there was a real positive energy from the players and supporters today.

“I know we went 1-0 down but we were quite brave with our tactics against a very good side who dominate possession.

“We kept our composure and found our deserved equaliser and performed heroically with some really big, big performances from some players today.

“Our fans were really good and our players responded and it just felt like old Charlton again.”

Charlton have now taken four points in their last two games and Powell believes this is something to build on during the festive period.

“It’s a good start to the Christmas period along with the Bolton game,” he said.

“I have asked these players to get something from all these four games, so we’ve done that in the two so far.

“Now our focus is on Sheffield Wednesday, which is a huge game, and we need to back up what we have done today and last week against Bolton.”

Man of the match Wilson was playing in midfield due to the return of full-back Chris Solly and looked more than comfortable in the role.

He and Solly linked up well down the right hand side and the former Stevenage man scored two goals in one game for the first time.

“They were two excellent finishes and he deserved that for his whole performance,” said the Addicks boss.

“He’s OK in front of goal, I like him in those positions and they were quick finishes.

“Like most players he is quite instinctive when he is in those areas.

“I felt for his efforts, athleticism and diligence he was rewarded with not just one but two goals and he finished them really well.”
