A fine last-minute strike from Ross Jenkins gave the Hornets victory over Grimsby Town in a third division fixture at Vicarage Road.
The visitors contended both that the ball had left play and that a Watford player had been offside in the build-up, with Mariners' boss Ron Ashman declaring that the referee's decision, "could cost me my job".
In fact, Ashman would last another month, but the Hornets, for whom this was the sole victory in a run of 12 games, were destined for the fourth division.
