Exeter City were Watford's hosts in a Southern League encounter from which little was expected, the visitors having failed to win in five league games in December.
Fred Gregory was on an injury list that saw his brother Val, later to attract a record transfer fee as a right-half, fill in at centre forward.
The younger brother managed to score the only goal of the game, the first of his senior career, tapping in following good work from Charlie White and Arthur Squires.
