FA refuse to disclose what punishment Watford could face due to fans using pyrotechnics

The FA has refused to clarify what sanctions Watford could face due to their supporters using pyrotechnics at away games.

The Hornets published a statement on Thursday night issuing what it described as "a last and final plea to their supporters" after the FA threatened the club with sanctions after pyrotechnics, which include devices such as smoke bombs and flares, were used at a few away grounds this season.

A yellow smoke bomb was then subsequently let off at Portman Road during the match with Ipswich Town which, according to a Hertfordshire Constabulary Twitter feed, resulted in one Hornets fan having an asthma attack.

The Watford Observer contacted the FA today to ask what sanctions the Golden Boys could face, following last Thursday's "final plea" from the club.

The FA refused to clarify but a spokeman did say: "The FA reminds all supporters that the use of pyrotechnics within stadia is a criminal offence and subject to banning orders."

He added: "We have written to Watford prior to the most recent occasion and we will be investigating."

The FA did confirm last week's warning was sent directly to Watford and it was not a circular message to all clubs.

We also asked Watford what the FA's possible sanctions were but they have been unavailable to comment.

They were also unable to confirm if Hornets fans have previously been subject to criminal prosecution or given banning orders due to the use of pyrotechnics.

Watford’s statement on Thursday read: "Despite a number of requests to desist, issued here at watfordfc.com and supported via other communication channels, Watford fans once again suffered from the use of pyrotechnics by fellow supporters at Leeds United on Saturday, December 7.

"The club now finds itself in the onerous position of having to issue a last and final plea to its supporters, especially those who frequent away matches, to ask that due notice is heeded of previous warnings."

In a previous statement, the Hornets added: "The use of pyrotechnics has no place in English football and we would urge all supporters to take positive action in assisting to eradicate this unlawful practice."

Research conducted with 1,635 Premier League supporters found 87 per cent of fans believe pyrotechnics are dangerous at matches and that 86 per cent were concerned for their safety. The same number thinks flares and smoke bombs are a fire risk and 79 per cent consider them to be a health hazard.

If the club receive a fine or have our fans banned from away games then those idiots who have done this, the club should take a civil action against those individuals including a banning order for life.
In addition the stewards should be doing their job and I am afraid to say undertake body searches at all matches on all fans.
Extreme I know, but some people are allergic to these and is a H&S issue.
So people please name and shame and rid these idiots from our game.
What purpose do they serve? ...........none!

There are a bunch of idiots on Watford forums on facebook who like to call themselves Watford casuels and they were on forums laughing at other fans saying they can do what they want and FA wont do anything at all , I agree that if the club gets a fine, ban for life those fans and sue them so they can pay the FA Fine. The club can easily find the names of these idiots as fans on facebook will tell them.

The Pozzo's have invested heavily into the club the last thing they should have to do is pick up a fine. I wonder what those "fans" that let these off would say if they put the ticket prices up to cover the fine.

I think all decent Watford fans are embarrassed by this. I was at the game Saturday, and I felt angry that for the first time in many years of following Watford to away games, that our clubs reputation as a family club with well behaved fans was being tarnished. I saw 2 kids get arrested, I would guess about 17 years old. Ban them for life and make their parents take some responsibility. Also find out who is selling this stuff to them.

yeah but the thing is surely it is the stewards fault for not searching fans properly if they did this wouldn't be happening would it? it was like the crystal palace game at home last season with their firecrackers, how on earth would you get them into the ground without somebody searching you ( this shows the stewards do not do what they are supposed to do which is insure safety for supporters!

I am, I believe, by nature, a fairly placid and well balanced individual but if I catch someone next to me, or close to me, letting off such an offensive item I will personally thump the crap out of them and you can put the banning order on me for doing so. Why is the world full of tosses who think they as individuals are bigger than the club .

I have heard these devises can be small and slim and can be hidden in intimate places, I don't suppose it would be much fun for the searcher or the person being searched, and it would take a lot longer to get everyone in.
far easier to CCTV the crowd and catch the culprit red handed, then the club can ban them and they can be prosecuted too.

It is also impossible for matchday stewards to search every single fan who wishes to enter a stadium, whether it be home or away. However, idiots and that is what these individuals are need to be identified by using the images from the stadia CCTV and banned from away travel and maybe even home to force a point.

People who let off smoke bombs and flares in any confined space, with all the obvious health and safety risks, are morons. They do this in the name of supporting their club, yet risk damaging it with FA sanctions. And they do it to “improve the atmosphere” for fans while, ironically, polluting it.

However, most have the IQ of an ill-educated amoeba. So, their tiny minds aren't able to understand all this. It’s also highly likely they don’t get much attention in the non-football, real world, so they’re not going to give up this nasty little hobby of theirs, as it’s the only way they can feel as if they are having some tangible impact on the world. People complaining just inflates their misguided sense of self-importance even further. And seeing people tweet photos of their brightly-coloured pyrotechnic is the nearest thing many of them get to copulation.

The solution, then, is for the authorities to proactively seek them out. Of course not everyone can be searched at games, but it is pretty easy to use a risk-based approach, incorporating a few basic checks on who’s trumpeting their latest pyro on the web. As another poster said, forums, Facebook and also Twitter are infested with these idiots. So, the question has to be asked – why aren’t people getting collared for this? One or two people being made an example of is all it needs. The morons can then go back to back to lighting their own ****, or whatever they did to amuse themselves before this all kicked off.

Happy Xmas to all the non-smoke-bombing and non-flaring Hornets out there. The rest of you – go shove a banger where the sun don’t shine.

I must admit I'm totally on board with banning these flares, pyrotechnics anf numpties that bring them into grounds.
I used to live in France and went to all of the montpellier home games. The stand we were in had to be evacuated as some cretin had lit a flare and then set toilet rolls alight, launched them off the top balcony and some hit the supporters below. The consequences would have been unthinkable.
Ban the idiots now.

Sorry mate, I think you need to lighten up and get off your high horse. If some little bellend decides he wants to let off a flare and, by doing so, endangers the health of hundreds of people around him (including many children) and also putting the club at risk of a fine or worse, then, whilst it certainly won't be me throwing any punches, I will be quite happy to see someone else man-handling the little chav - perhaps a bit of a hiding would teach him a lesson. Would you rather risk the health of an innocent bystander or the health of a jumped up little **** who has complete disregard for those around him and continues to flout the law?
I would imagine it's the same group of friends who keep letting these things off. It's obviously a kudos thing, but if the actions of this bunch of helmets lead to a fine then there will be a lot of angry watford fans out there and rightly so. I think the Pozzos should personally issue a stern warning themselves with threats of 5 year banning orders etc. Perhaps if some of the players also had a message for them it might get a message through?
Whilst dozens of flares may make for a good spectacle, one p I s s y little yellow flare every other game makes us more of a laughing stock and adds nothing to an atmosphere.

These idoits that call themselves Watford Fans and openly bragged on the Enjoythe game forum on Facebook about there behaviour, one of the latest posting on Monday was "We are Watford, we do what we want" and it got numerous likes !!! somes up some of the mindless, brainless morons that call themselves Watford supporters, I wonder what there reaction will be when the FA hit the club with sanctions, albiet, a fine, bans on away travel or worst case scenario a points deduction, which they will do. Will they still "LIKE" the the penatly dished out by the FA ? The Pozzo's have worked tirelessly in putting this club in a good position, probably the best position they have been in for at least the last 10 years, these idoits could ruin it all by there behaviour and attitude. There is only one place for this "Pond Life" to go if they want to continue with there childish and immature behaviou, and thats 7 mile up the motorway.
