Watford refuse to comment on whether they will listen to fans' petition on announcer Richard Short

Watford have refused to comment on their decision to only have one announcer working on match days in the future – which has resulted in a petition with more than 600 signatures.

Sections of the Hornets’ fan base have expressed their disappointment with the club after it decided it would not use announcer Richard Short for every home game.

Instead, Short and his long-standing colleague Tim Coombs will take to the microphone alternatively – on a two games on and two games off basis – rather than the pair sharing the workload.

In the past, Coombs, who has been in the role for 15 years, has read out the opposition teams, dedications and half-time scores with Short, who has held his position for 16 years, doing the rest of the work, including announcing the home teams before kick-off.

In their initial statement on December 14, Watford said: “Watford FC have decided that there will be one single announcer on the matchday microphone going forward here at Vicarage Road.

“Radio Hornet's long-serving duo Richard Short and Tim Coombs will share those duties at forthcoming home fixtures, beginning this afternoon [against Yeovil Town] with the latter.”

Watford refused to comment when they were asked to explain the decision and would not clarify whether both men will still work on a match day, with only one on the mic.

An online petition was set up asking the club if Short could continue as the permanent, full-time announcer and it currently has 635 signatures. However, Watford refused to comment on whether they would reconsider the decision if there was enough support.

Short, who also works at Wembley for some events, did not want to comment on the matter.

Many clubs only have one announcer but there are high-profile examples where two are used, such as Manchester United and Arsenal.

Coombs was scheduled to be the announcer for Thursday’s game against Millwall, with Short returning to the microphone on Sunday when the Hornets take on Queens Park Rangers.

You can sign up to the fan-led petition here.

What the F**k is going on with our club?

It is so trivial who reads the half time, 50/50 tickets, team, weddings/birthdays etc but it's par with what this new management are prioritising, it appears.
I think there are more pressing matters to deal with around the ground like, improving toilet facilities, better choice and economical catering etc.

Wouldn't mind who did the announcing, but it would be nice to hear whoever it is in the Vicarage End, which we didn't at the last game.

To be honest I don't care much for either. Nothing personal but I don't like the way Shorty bellows at us particularly as he builds up to kick off. ENJOYYYYYYY the GAMMMMME just does my head in. Likes the sound of his own voice a bit too much for me.
And the other bloke, Tim, has a dull and boring voice that is sometimes hard to hear.
However, I'd be interested in knowing the decision behind the club wanting one announcer. If it has to be one of the existing two then Shorty is better though I'm not going to be signing any petition.

With over 700 people already having signed the petition its clear this decision has angered many fans. Given that most people generally wouldn't worry about such an issue the number who have is amazing.
Given the recent announcement that the club values fans input it will be interesting to see the response.
No comment clearly isn't good enough.

Richard Short was one of the reasons that I stopped attending matches regularly: patronising, histrionic & hyped-up fake emotion from this strutting boyman. In the days of Adam Cummings we used to make our own vibe under the scoreboard & in the Rookery. I well recall how Short stupidly destroyed Graham Taylor's farewell.

Last home game my nephew took part in the penalty shoot out final at half time. Not only did he not get the names right, know that it was the final, he lost count how many penalise had been taken and didn't know who had won!!

To top it all we couldn't hear a thing he was saying to the point that even Graham Taylor had kept count (*legend) and told my nephew that they had won and that the guy on the Mike couldn't be heard!

To those of you who are bothered re the current situation, if you have not already signed the petition, PLEASE do so and also write directly to the Club voicing your disappointment at the decision which hopefully fan power will be able to overturn. Two announcers has worked extremely well for the past however many years ..... DON'T FIX IT if it ain't broken !!!!

A good point but that is 700 out of 13-14,000. I think it was the fans input to the recent questionnaire that has prompted this change. I didn't say so myself but I know others who mentioned about the announcer in a negative way.

I will give Shorty credit after the play off match last May when his words managed to get the fans off the pitch so the players could come back out, he did very well then.
However, I definitely noticed this season that he is somewhat patronising at half times especially during the shoot outs where he was always complaining about being so busy at half time to the point it did become annoying, it probably didn't help him that the PA system was at times cranked up to a level that was way too high.
I remember Adam in the 80's and would agree that both of these guys have had a good run at it for well over a decade. Bring in a fresh voice. I say voice as I don't think a good announcer needs to be stomping all over the pitch to remind us who he is.

So the club decide to make a change and suddenly it comes a major issue and bombarded with posts on Facebook/Watford Groups... as much as it sounds stupid 'Social Sites' are a way of information and life nowadays.... Personally I like Shorty but yes he does like the sound of his own voice but does do a good interview on the pitch at HT.... First thing to help him would be remove the 'Enjoy the Game' group on Facebook as all it does is gives the fans a chance to post negative views about club with uneducated POV's of certain fans that do not understand the rules of a football stadium and in itself put you off the match day experience.... granted yes we all have a POV but there are times and places to do it....... but promoting PYRO with the younger fans saying 'its safe'.... Cameras 'people saying they are being picked on - its the rules..... and overall fans get support off other fans, then they think they have a point then take it out on the club when infact they could contact the club directly and in the correct manner to get the correct answer..... my view.....

I like shortly - better music, less talk at HT and before the game (im sure he has a script so thats the clubs fault TBH) and not to take everything so personal - a petition to the club is not the route..... maybe 'how can I help or support this decision or change in myself perhaps?' I would like to see him stay but decisions have to be made and reviewed and the discussed not anti/this/that/other like usual rubbish from the usual bunch.....

Agree entirely Scully. Catering should be the off pitch priority. I know many people who have stopped using the facilities because of poor choice & pricing, and the level of service is pretty shambolic. Also when are they going to sort out the problem with the cards? I have about £20 on mine& I have not been able to use it or earn further cash back at any games this season.
