Watford faced a daunting third division trip to Holker Park, Barrow, where the home side were unbeaten in 27 games.
An early Barry Endean strike got the Hornets off to a good start, and he added a second when Brian Owen released him through the centre to drive home from 25 yards.
Terry Garbett smashed home a third to end the game as a contest before half-time, and Keith Eddy struck the fourth against his former club after the interval.
Jim Mulvaney's consolation never threatened to overturn Watford's own away run, which this result stretched to a post-war record-equalling eight without defeat.
This run would be extended by three further games including a cup draw at Old Trafford, ending with defeat at Torquay.
