In winning 2-1 against new boss Ken Furphy's side at Vicarage Road, Gillingham became the first visitors to taste victory in league or cup at the ground since Peterborough United 30 games and well over 12 months earlier.
Ron Saunders grabbed Watford's goal in a game that saw 17-year-old Jonny Williams make the first of 419 appearances for the club.
