Gianfranco Zola has admitted he is unsure if he can turn Watford’s fortunes around after a fifth consecutive home defeat.

The Hornets played well during the first half against Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon and had a dubious Ikechi Anya goal ruled out for offside.

But it was the visitors who went into half time ahead following Connor Wickham’s free-kick and Wednesday then nullified the Golden Boys’ threat in the second period, with the Hornets unable to create a clear-cut opportunity until deep into injury-time.

The 1-0 defeat means Watford have not scored at home for four matches and today’s opponent, Sheffield Wednesday, were the only team in the Football League who had not kept a clean sheet all season prior to this afternoon’s game.

It is the first time in 23 years that Watford have lost five home games on the bounce and they are now without a win in nine games, leaving the club 15 points below the automatic promotion places.

When asked if he was confident he could turn their form around, Zola replied: “I am confident I will have to think about it very much.

“Football is a game for results and at the moment we are not producing results – I am aware of that – so I will see what I have to do because I am responsible for what I do and I do care about what I do. I will see how I can affect the situation, if I can.”
