Gianfranco Zola on the alleged racist remark which led to Watford's game in Italy being abandoned

Gianfranco Zola has expressed his disappointment at the alleged racist remark which resulted in a Watford under-19 side abandoning a match in Italy yesterday.

Watford's youth team coach David Hughes told his players to leave the field 15 minutes into the second half against an under-19 side from Serie B club Latina.

Hughes refused to comment on the matter when he was asked this morning but head coach Zola has spoken with the former Cardiff City defender about the incident.

Zola said: "I have had a chat with Dave Hughes and he reported some things to me. We are looking into it to see what happened exactly.

"I am certainly not pleased about it and I do not like it but before I say any more I want to find out more about what happened from the organisers. I need to have the bigger picture before commenting any more."

He did clarify: "It looks like it was something between players but I am trying to find out more because I only spoke to Dave Hughes quickly last night."

Watford as a club have yet to release a statement on the matter but racism charity Kick It Out did tweet: "Kick It Out is making enquiries into an alleged racist incident which took place during the 'Wojtyla Cup' fixture between Watford and Latina."

The Hornets were 1-0 down to Latina at the time the game was called off.

Hughes can be seen calling his players off the field five minutes and 29 seconds into the video below.

The club needs to back Dave Hughes to the hilt. Having the responsibility of the nature of the boys on his shoulders it's important that standards are set. Language is part of the game I'm afraid but racism? No! Well done Watford for not tolerating it and lets hope it's sorted out through the correct channels

If only EUFA and FIFA acted strongly against racism. I recall the trip to Upton Park when bananas were thrown at John Barnes. Eastern Europen, closer Euorpean and Russian teams and national teams need to be punished hard. Racism still exists in the UK but thank God not tolerated at football grounds here anymore

I have absolute faith that the right call was made to take the players off. No-one would do that otherwise. The footballing authorities need to take action against the responsible person(s) and give them a ban and fine that'll make them think twice about using such language.

The UK has its problems, and racism in indeed still around, but we're in a better place than many of our European partners.

Dave will have earned alot of respect from the players who do look for leadership and guidance from those in authority.

Absolutely 100% spot on. The problem with racism is that exists in a much more covert manner and there are too many in authority where dishing out and accepting injustice is all part of their DNA on so many levels in society and in their organisations.

What has Dave done today to make his family and WFC players feel proud?
He has stood up and the young players will take that lesson to heart.

I reckon the people who were insulted would have preferred to prove their opponents wrong on the pitch and shown their courage and heart....It's always middle aged white men patronisingly moaning about racism.....

It's important we all air our views anyway. We won't get very far if we all agree on everything.
