The Hornets' spectacular League Cup campaign, which had already seen them overturn a 4-0 first leg deficit to beat Southampton and knock out European champions Nottingham Forest, came to a dramatic end in front of 30,000 at Highfield Road, Coventry.

The fifth round tie had finished 2-2 at Vicarage Road a week earlier, but City earned their semi-final place against West Ham with a 5-0 victory in this replay, future Hornet Garry Thompson amongst the scorers.
