Watford entertained Manchester United in the first divison at Vicarage Road.
The game marked Watford's first league encounter with United, but also their first home defeat in the top flight with teenager Norman Whiteside scoring the afternoon's only goal.
The day also marked the official opening of the £200,000 railway 'stadium halt' at the rear of the Rookery end of the ground, at which many of the 5,500 visiting United supporters arrived for the game, bypassing the town centre from Watford Junction.
