Addicks boss wants midfield and defence to chip in with goals
CHRIS Powell has challenged all of his outfield players to chip in with goals so the Addicks can lose the tag as the joint lowest scorers in the Championship.
Charlton share the unwanted distinction of having only scored nine goals with Yeovil Town and head to fellow strugglers Birmingham this weekend on the back of Sunday’s scoreless draw with Wigan.
Striker Yann Kermorgant has an outside chance of being available for the St Andrews trip after hobbling off in that Wigan game.
But even if he does make it, manager Powell still knows other players have to play their part in the scoring stakes sooner rather than later.
The Valley chief said: “Cameron Stewart has shown us he can score a spectacular goal and it would be good for him to chip in.
“Bradley Pritchard had a chance to score for us and you are looking for the midfielders to weigh in with a few so we’ve got to get going on that front, no doubt.
“They’ve got to weigh in anyway.
“You are looking at your centre halves to chip in with two or three, full-backs usually get one a season at the most and then your midfielders you are looking for anything from five and ten.
“If they can nick five goals wide players and centre midfielders then it takes the burden off the strikers.
“Everyone will always look at strikers when the team aren’t scoring but actually everyone has got to chip in.”
Powell added: “They’ve had chances. Dale has, he was very close with his long ranger.
“Bradley Pritchard definitely should have got his chance on target against Wigan so they are the ones where you are looking for them to chip in.
“Johnnie Jackson is close to fitness now, he is someone who will always chip in with goals - that’s his forte from midfield.
“When you are missing him as well and we are not sort of over flowing with goals, then that is a large chunk out.# “I wanted to bring a striker in but he is injured, Jon Obika.
“I think any team needs goals and we have to get going on that front for certain.”
And Powell didn’t rule out the possibility of loans coming in, even if number one target Obika doesn’t currently fit the bill.
“If that is an area we have to go down - because if we lose Yann through injury we are looking at two lads who have played in the Championship, and Joe Pigott who has just been introduced this season – it is something we will have to keep looking at.”
One man who won’t be solving Charlton’s goals shortage is French striker Basile Camerling after the Addicks decided not to offer him a deal following two recent trials.
Powell added: “We won’t be following up on Basile.
“He came back, done OK against West Ham but it is just something we are not going to pursue.”
