5:39pm Tuesday 15th October 2013 in Latest Sport
First-half goals from Fernando Forestieri and Lewis McGugan helped Watford complete a 2-1 victory against Dagenham & Redbridge in a behind closed doors friendly at London Colney.
Gianfranco Zola named a strong starting XI which included a number of first team regulars including the likes of Diego Fabbrini, Gabriele Angella and Joel Ekstrand.
Watford began the game brightly and went ahead as Fabbrini released Daniel Pudil and he crossed for Forestieri who flicked the ball home.
The lead was doubled soon after as McGugan curled a free-kick past Dagenham’s trialist goalkeeper.
The Hornets’ two-goal advantage didn’t last however and the Daggers pulled a goal back five minutes before the interval as Matt Saunders slotted past Gary Woods.
Zola made several changes at the break, with a number of the Hornets’ younger players given the chance to impress.
Luke O’Nien was crowded out in the penalty area before Javier Acuna was denied by the Daggers' stopper.
The visitors almost grabbed a late equaliser as the ball dropped to Josh Scott at the back-post but Woods reacted quickly to deny the striker’s shot and ensure a victory for the Hornets.
Watford first half XI: Woods; Brown, Angella, Ekstrand; Cassetti, McGugan, Iriney, McEachran, Pudil; Fabbrini, Forestieri.
Watford second half XI: Woods; Brown (Rosenthal 70), Belkalem, Hall; Faraoni, Byers, O’Nien, Kyprianou; Mensah, Acuna, Ikpeazu.
