Gianfranco Zola knows his best Watford XI but it is about 'balance'

The key to rotation is striking a balance between resting players from the strenuous demands of the Championship schedule while maintaining enough quality to win matches, says Watford head coach Gianfranco Zola.
The Hornets head coach has used 18 different players in the last three matches alone and while he maintains he does have a first-choice side, Zola suggested fatigue is a constant factor when considering his selection.
“I have a first XI of course,” he said. “But in a busy Championship season, you could play your first XI in the first game and the second game but by the third match you can be sure they will no longer be your best XI. I am sure of that.”
He continued: “It is a fine balance because you need to make sure the team always remains strong.
“If you do make changes then you need to make sure you have enough quality in the team to be competitive.
“What we have done this year is made the squad stronger and it has been working. But it is a balance.”
Watford’s last seven matches took place during a three-week period and Premier League and Championship clubs are now in the middle of a two-week internatonal break.
Zola gave the players a few days off this week before they returned to training yesterday (Thursday).
Zola admits the rest comes at the perfect time for his players, particularly some of the first-team regulars who have been used in the majority of their matches.
“I think the rest is good because obviously even if you make changes like I have, the fatigue is still there,” Zola said.
“Plus some players - Troy Deeney, Lewis McGugan and Gabriele Angella - haven't rested very much.
“So it is a very welcome period because there are very few countries where you play seven such competitive games in 18 days.
“I think it is too much so we welcome this time and it will refresh everyone.”
