Gianfranco Zola believes Chelsea loanee Josh McEachran can help Watford 'control the game'
Gianfranco Zola believes Josh McEachran has the ability to play either as a sitting midfielder or in a more advanced role in the centre of the park.
The Chelsea England Under-21 international joined Watford on loan until January 2 on Friday and speaking about the signing following Saturday’s 5-1 win at Barnsley, Zola said: “Josh can play as a sitting midfielder because he’s got enough quality to do the work but also he can play as one of the inside midfielders.
“He’s a player that’s got quality on the ball, probably that is his best quality, and he will help us especially when we want to control the game, he’s got the quality to do that. He can play under pressure and that’s very important for us.”
The 20-year-old burst onto the scene as a teenager with Chelsea but his career has not progressed to level many predicted and he spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough.
“We know the potential that Josh has got,” Zola said. “We also know that if he’s coming to play for us, he hasn’t become the player he was supposed to become.
“We will look at him and try to improve him because we know that if we can get him to his potential then we can have a big benefit as a team as well.”
