Watford's Ikechi Anya scores on full debut as Scotland win in Macedonia
Ikechi Anya celebrated his full Scotland debut tonight with the first goal as Scotland won their World Cup qualifier 2-1 in Macedonia.
Having been called up to the national squad for the first time and on the back of an eye-catching substitute appearance in Friday's 2-0 defeat at home to Belgium, the Watford wing-back was selected by Gordon Strachan for the starting XI in Skopje.
The Watford wing-back was in the mood from the outset, showing consistenly for the ball down the left flank and demonstrating his trademark willingness to run at defenders when he had the opportunity.
Anya was Scotland's stand out player in the opening half and almost set up the opener after 25 minutes when his excellent cross was headed over by Steven Naismith.
But it was the Hornets' wide man who made the breakthrough after 59 minutes when he collected a pass from Barry Bannan and arrowed a shot across the Macedonian keeper and into the net.
It looked like the hosts would grab a point when Jovan Kostoviski equalised on 82 minutes but Strachan's men were not to be denied as Shaun Maloney curled home a superb 25-yard free-kick with two minutes of normal time remaining.
The win made it back-to-back Group A away victories for the Scots following their triumph in Croatia and also lifted them off the bottom of the table, above their hosts and Wales.
