Tom Rosenthal and Jorell Johnson score for Watford Under-18s against AFC Wimbledon
Watford Under-18s began their South East Youth Alliance campaign with a 2-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon thanks to goals from Tom Rosenthal and Jorell Johnson.
Rosenthal, son of ex-Watford forward Ronny, opened the scoring after ten minutes, collecting a pass from Alex Jakubiak on the right-hand edge of the Dons’ 18-yard box before drilling the ball past Billy Bishop's near post.
That lead was short-lived though as Danny Gallagher equalised in fortunate fashion when he charged down Hornets’ ‘keeper Daniel Wilks’ clearance from Alfie Young’s backpass and the ball flew into the Watford net.
George Oakley tested Wilks soon after with a lobbed effort but the Golden Boys’ young number one was equal to the effort.
Jakubiak was denied by the Dons’ Bishop before Chris Dillon struck the top of the crossbar. Substitute Dennon Lewis - on for the injured Carl Stewart - tested Bishop soon after his arrival after receiving a pass from goalscorer Rosenthal.
Watford’s winner eventually came when Ryan Hope’s low free-kick from the left was met by centre-back Johnson who bundled home from close-range to secure the win for Dave Hughes’ side.
Watford: Wilks; Young, Johnson, Doherty; Barnum-Bobb, Dillon (Cumberbatch, 65), Stewart (Lewis, 50), Hope, Kyprianou; Jakubiak (Bawling, 70), Rosenthal.
AFC Wimbledon: Bishop; Kaja, Wilson, Switon, Sweeney, Vlicktink, Frost, Pearce, Oakley, Basker, Gallagher.
