Connaught boys Under-18s were crowned Aegon Team Tennis Under-18 National Champions at Roehampton at the weekend.
Lewis Thompson, Ben Wood and Kane Patience were joined by the younger Lewis Tyler and Will Thomson.
On the first day Connaught were drawn against the second seeds Esporta Lancashire. Tyler put up a good fight against Faris McGrath but lost and Patience lost a tight match to Sean Evans 6-7, 4-6.
Wood played well to beat Matthew Boyle as did Thompson at number one when he levelled the tie with a win over Jacob Whalley 6-2, 6-4.
With it all to play for, Tyler and Wood pulled off a great victory at number two doubles, winning the deciding match tie-break 11-9. Patience and Tyler won their first set 6-2 before losing the second 6-1 and the third 10-8 after a tie-break.
Thompson and Wood booked a place in the finals by winning the tie-break in the deciding match 10-6.
Top seeds Nottingham IHPC lay in wait in the final and Thomson came in at number four but both he and Wood were unable to win their singles matches.
However, Patience put in a strong showing to beat James Defusto 6-2, 6-4 and then Thompson delivered again with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Shakeel Manj.
The doubles rubbers were split again, meaning another match tie break to decide the title. Tyler and Wood again handled their nerves well to win 10-7.
Coach Will Roberts praised his players and said:"It was a great team effort and it has been rewarding to see all these boys grow so much over the last couple years and a pleasure to be a part of this great victory today."
