Addicks skipper impressed by Peterborough's attacking prowess

CHARLTON captain Johnnie Jackson admitted Peterborough are a side who impress him after the two teams fought out a 2-2 draw on Tuesday evening.

Jackson levelled the scores in the second half and Danny Haynes put the Addicks in front three minutes later after Danny Swanson had opened the scoring after 24 minutes.

But Charlton were unable to hang on for a vital three points as Michael Bostwick drew the hosts level 20 minutes from time and afterwards Jackson conceded he was impressed by the attack minded nature of Posh.

“They were the same at The Valley, I was impressed with them that night,” said Jackson.

“We managed beat them but they caused us quite a few problems.

“They are a very attack minded side, they have got some good players and they create chances.

“Sometimes the way they go forward can leave them a bit open at the back, which is probably why they have conceded quite a lot as well.

“But it’s an admirable way to play that they want to attack, play attacking football and they want to pass the ball, so they’re a good side to play against.

“We would have liked to have won to have increased the gap between ourselves and Peterborough and the other sides down there.

“But we’re pleased with the performance and the amount of chances we created, and on another night we might have won it.

“So we go to Huddersfield in good spirits and if we can go up there and win, four points from the two games - we would have taken that return.

“But we still have to go and do that but we’ll take confidence from tonight going up there.”

The Addicks dominated the early stages and rattled the crossbar after only five minutes through Lawrie Wilson.

But they failed to take advantage of their early dominance and fell behind and after Charlton’s recent run, it may have led a number of supporters looking over their shoulders at the interval.

Jackson admitted looking down the Championship table is something players and fans alike inevitably do at this stage of the season, but the skipper stressed he and his team-mates do not have any worries or relegation fears.

Jackson said: “Not worries, but I think it’s unavoidable.

“You look at the league table as players and you do your working out and you work out how many points you think you’ll need and things like that.

“I think that’s unavoidable.

“It was pleasing to stop the run of defeats and get a point.

“We would have liked all three but it’s another point on the board and onto Saturday.”

He added: “I haven’t studied what has kept you up in previous years.

“I think it’s just about trying to gain a bit of momentum and going onto the next game and trying to get those wins, that’s all you can do.

“We just have to worry about ourselves rather than other sides and just churn out as many points as you can from our last 10 games.

“We have always had belief that we are more than capable of sustaining our Championship status - as we still do.”

Jackson added: “I thought we started the game well, we emphasised we hadn’t done that in the last couple of games and we really wanted to make a point of it and I think we did.

“We bossed it and looked like going ahead, but then got caught on the break and we were disappointed with the goal and to go in 1-0 down at half-time.

“It was important to come out with a reaction, although we nearly went 2-0 down after about 10 seconds of the second half.

“But then after that I think we gained control again.

“I got the goal and then after that we were in the ascendancy, got the second and looked like we might go onto win it.

“But then they’ve come back into it and in fairness to them, they rallied again, got their goal and towards the end they’re probably the ones pushing for a winner.

“So a draw was probably about fair on the balance of the play over the whole game.”
