Peterborough United 2-2 Charlton Athletic

CHARLTON came from behind and then lost the lead to gain valuable point in a draw against relegation strugglers Peterborough this evening.

Posh went ahead through Danny Swanson after 24 minutes, but a quick-fire double from Johnnie Jackson and Danny Haynes put the Addicks ahead in the second half before Michael Bostwick levelled the scores for Darren Ferguson’s men.

The Addicks started the brighter and came within a whisker of opening the scoring in the fourth minute as Lawrie Wilson’s angled drive rattled the underside of Bobby Olejnik’s crossbar.

Two minutes later Ricardo Fuller flashed the ball across the face of goal but neither Danny Haynes or Callum Harriott could get a decisive touch.

Despite settling the better, Charlton fell behind in the 24th minute.

Posh wideman Swanson picked up possession in the centre circle, drove forward, nutmegged Matt Taylor and slotted beyond David Button.

The Championship’s bottom side were buoyed by the opener and almost doubled their lead 10 minutes before the break.

Tommy Rowe released the pacey Nathaniel Mendez-Laing on the left, who came inside before forcing Button into a save low down to his left.

The second half almost started in disastrous fashion for the Addicks when Lee Tomlin latched onto a through ball from Swanson, but he could only strike the post 14 seconds after the restart.

However, it was the visitors who drew the next decisive blow, as Harriott crossed low towards the edge of the box.

His centre was met by Jackson, who took a touch before firing beyond Olejnik.

With their tails up, Charlton completed the turnaround three minutes later.

Taylor recycled a corner out to Chris Solly, who dinked the ball to the far post where Michael Morrison saw a header from point range cleared off the line, but Haynes was on hand to smash the ball into the roof of the net.

In the 67th minute Posh hauled themselves level.

Tomlin’s corner was only half cleared and Michael Bostwick drilled through the arms of Button from 20 yards.

Posh almost grabbed a winner in stoppage time from another Tomlin corner but Addicks skipper Jackson was in the right place at the right time to nod Bostwick’s header off the line.
