Stewart on the money after first goal

SCORING his maiden Wanderers goal means the odds on Anthony Stewart winning a pre-season bet with his team mates have been slashed.

The central defender struck at the death to secure all three points against Fleetwood on Saturday - and make himself front runner in a three-way duel between himself, Charles Dunne and Marvin McCoy.

Whichever of the trio scores the most by the end of the season receives a ton from the two losers, and Stewart's last minute winner means he's the only one to get his name on the scoresheet so far.

He said: "I thought it would have come a long time before but it's come today luckily and I'm just happy I've scored my first goal. Also, I've got a bet on with Charles and Marvin so hopefully I can win that at the end of the season.

"Most goals in the season takes a couple of hundred away. I have to try and get another to get further away from them."

The youngster, who has been with Wanderers since the age of 15, had been getting ever closer to his first professional goal in recent weeks, having missed parts of the season.

He said: "I've been stop/start through injuries. I just had to wait for my chance. I've had a few before and missed a few - today I scored."

The goal capped a second successive Adams Park man of the match award for Stewart as he helped Blues keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.

For so long the game looked like it had 0-0 written all over it and the winning goal came from a corner awarded when a Stewart shot beat the keeper but was cleared off the line by giant Fleetwood forward Jon Parkin.

Stewart said: "The clean sheet means more but the goal's a bonus. I thought I was going to be out of luck today."
