AUDIO: Derby County boss Nigel Clough says there was 'nothing in' game with Watford

Picture: Action Images Picture: Action Images

Nigel Clough believes “there was nothing in” Saturday’s game between Watford and Derby County and claimed not doing the basics well enough was what cost his team.

The Rams’ manager praised his team’s work rate and performance at Vicarage Road but was left ruing what he described as their “Achilles heel” of not being able to defend corners.

You can hear a section of Clough’s post-match press conference below.

Yes other than the fact that we played better and had twice as many goal attempts !!

Derby had much of the second half after there pen.. We are still winning when not playing at our best...

yes but we were completely dominant before then, and they were gifted a soft penalty. We were not at our best but they barely created a chance even after the pen. To say there was nothing in it is nonsense.

Forwards are always the key in this league.. Putting the ball in the net.. All the teams in the upper half all have very good forwards.. Watford some of the best...

Lots of the crowd getting anxious and shouting at the players to steam forward in the 2nd half but you can see the logic behind the Vydra / Hogg substitution. Our passing and intensity was off....so we put in an extra man in midfield and say to Derby come on then what can you do...I cannot really remember Bond being troubled even though they played it in and around our penalty box an awful lot which looks bad on the eye but in reality is not a problem.

I guess that is why football managers are football managers and 80% of people watching are ignorant to tactics, strategy and formations.....

However this is the game that has done it for me. We did not play very well....yet made it 3 wins in a week and have given Deeney and Vydra a rest. I love Watford FC.

They did enjoy passing between their defenders, which showed good closing down skills from our players

We were all over them until the so called penalty!
On a different note, couldn't get tickets for the AYP thing tonight. Does anyone know whether it'll be on Hornets Player like the fans forum was?

Why aren't there more posters like you. I am SICK to the back teeth of the wannabe managers on here telling Zola not to rotate EVER or who to rotate when they deign to allow him to do his job. He got us to 2nd place not all the monkeys on here

Yes, he learned from the BC game and made changes that would have minimal impact on team understanding and style of play and managed to rest a few key players.

The penalty was crazy. I've watched it ten times and still have no idea what the foul is supposed to be.

That's fair enough, right up until the point you refer to people as "monkeys".

I rest my case....a few key players 'rested' yet the players brought in make 'minimal impact'. We should have a squad of 11 and not a player more.

Not sure just how many times Young Clough mentioned the word quality, or lack of it.Hopefully he meant Derby. Our side is quality top to bottom, even on a bad day we created enough chances to have won by a far clearer margin. And nobody knows what the penalty was really given for, just another Vic gift.
What is becoming very clear is not many opposition managers want to give WFC much credit. Not to many Mick McCarthy types about nowadays just a bunch of sad losers. When Hull took us apart a few months back Gianfranco was the first to compliment Alex Bruces side on how good a side they was on the day.

Talk about a misquote... 'minimal impact on team understanding and style of play' means replacements that FITTED IN, not those that made minimal impact overall. A squad of 11? Good job you aren't a manager then...

The only reason they had more of the 2nd half was because (rightly or wrongly) we let them.

We did the same thing vs. Brum at home and (less successfully) Palace at home.

Take the penalty out of the equation (2nd time Richard Keogh has won a dubious penalty by falling over at a corner at the Vic) and im struggling to remember them having any real attempt on goal

Yes, a theme on Derby sites has been that the pen was their first shot on target... (only real one??)

Every home game from now until the end will be scrappy and ugly in the main. No team will allow us to play and why should they. We should have enough quality to overcome most but there are still a few twists to come. Just enjoy the ride and if its not going our way, remember the dross that we've seen over recent years.

Well well well. Watford were way ahead of Derby in terms of quality but Derby did have a spurt of ambition after they'd been given the penalty. We should've been given a free-kick directly before they were handed a dodgy penalty and, had the score stayed 2-0 (which I know it didnt) then what would Clough have said?

I am well chuffed with the progress being made. I'll be the first to hold my hands up and say that I was totally against Dyche being given the heave-ho, but GZ is doing a cracking job. Looking back, I think we could've done with Eustace in midfield for the final part of the game against Derby as we were getting slightly over-run, and Eustace doesn't waste many balls, but we got the result and that's the main thing.

Roll-on Friday. It really won't be easy as Wolves will be craving for a win. Hopefully that'll leave them open at the back.

This is the start of the final push now folks. Pull together and enjoy the ride.

I thank you

"There was nothing between the two sides except a bit of quality" - if I was a Derby fan, I'd be a bit worried about my manager dismissing quality as if that wasn't a particularly imortant part of the game. I bet Holloway doesn't agree. He probably thinks moving the ball quickly on the deck is some sort of loophole we've found.

No, Wolves won't be easy. They'll put up a fight. Any player thinking they can stroll through that game, please don't, it will all go Pete Tong.

Absolutely correct Mellow. One hundred percent right I am not a manager. Nor you. Nor anybody else on here that cries whenever their favourite player isn't picked. So well done.

Eustance doesn't waste many balls? Have you ever watched Watford before? Have a lot of time for the work Eustace puts in and has been a top performer but the main criticism of him is that he wastes so many balls, clipping it over the top into the corner.

For all their industry, the rams were creating nothing and our rookie keeper had not one worthwhile save to make until the referee took pity on Derby and tried to even things up with a string of dubious decisions in their favour. Had we actually let this one got away it would only have been down to the men in black and I wouldn't back Derby to score in a knocking-shop.
Clough get real, you are no tactical genius.
