Ainsworth: Players are on empty after win

Ainsworth: Players are on empty after win Ainsworth: Players are on empty after win

BLUES boss Gareth Ainsworth was proud of the way his players didn't let tiredness affect them during the win over York City.

Wanderers went into the game off the back of a superbly ground out win at Gillingham and Ainsworth revealed some of his troops were still feeling the after effects of their trip to Priestfield.

He said some of the players were on their knees after the 4-0 thrashing of York as Wanderers clocked up their biggest win since Ainsworth took charge of the team to move into the top half of the table for the first time.

And he said that was down to a change in mentality where Blues go into games expecting to win.

He said: "After Monday I think a few of them were on half tanks at the start of the game today because they gave everything on Monday night. To be not fully recovered and put in a performance like that speaks volumes of where we are and how far we've come. Some of the lads are literally on empty, they have given everything today.

"They have confidence and belief they can win any game. We don't fear anybody in the league and after Monday we've proved that."

Yet despite a 4-0 win Ainsworth felt his players had had to dig in to get a result.

He said: "We didn't play fantastic flowing football but we won 4-0 and it's a really good result to have.

"It was a very flat game. The early goal changed it in a bit of a funny way. I told the lads they've got to grind it out a little bit and they did.

"I put in the paper 'After the Lord Mayor's show' and it could have been, but I didn't let that happen and the lads themselves didn't let it happen."

Congratulations to Gaz and the team for an absolutely superb week.

As one who previously commented about the team playing 'relegation form' football earlier this season I'm pleased to have to eat a large portion of humble pie and applaud the fantastic turn around that seemed so distant at the time.

The spirit of the whole team and their willingness to run off the ball, chase back and keep going for 90+ minutes made today's game one of the happiest times spent at Adams Park for a very long time.

All credit to Gaz for imparting his enthusuaism and charisma on the team. He thoroughly deserves that new contract but lets just savour the moment and concentrate on getting another great result on Tuesday night for now.

Up the Blues!!
