Wycombe Wanderers 4, York City 0.

DEAN Morgan’s pair of penalties and a wondergoal from Joel Grant sent Wanderers into the top half of the table as they recorded their first double of the campaign.

Blues were in front at the break as Morgan thumped home two spot kicks to lay the foundations for yet another victory.

Grant then scored a sublime solo goal and captain Dave Winfield wrapped things up in the second half as Wanderers racked up their biggest victory of the season.

Wanderers fans are now surely going into every single game expecting their side to win as the Gareth Ainsworth revolution continues to gather pace, courtesy of a ninth win from 13 outings as Blues continue to bulldoze their way through the rest of League Two.

Their momentum looks unstoppable and a four goal thrashing against the freefalling Minstermen in no way flattered Blues.

Just two minutes were on the clock when they went in front thanks to some quick thinking from Morgan. He caught Scott Kerr dithering on the edge of the penalty area and snaffled the ball off him, before the floundering Kerr could only bring the striker crashing down in his attempts to retrieve it.

A penalty was the only possible outcome and Morgan emphatically despatched it past Michael Ingham to give Blues the lead.

Thanks to a typically energetic start from Blues York struggled to break out of their own half but some backs to the wall defending kept Wanderers at arm’s length. Grant’s snapshot from the edge of the box that skidded wide was the closest Wycombe came to adding to their total.

City were generally solid in their attempts to keep Blues at bay but a slip from Daniel Parslow allowed Sam Wood to steal in and get on the end of Grant’s cross, but a sprawling Ingham somehow managed to turn the ball away from five yards.

York created little going forward as top scorer Jason Walker – who headed wide from a right wing cross – and Matty Blair, who scuffed woefully off target after a promising run from Curtis Obeng, wasted their only clear cut chances of the first half.

More of the possession and chances went the home side’s way and Grant headed over the top from Michael Harriman’s cross after the Minstermen struggled to clear their lines when a Morgan shot cannoned away off a defender.

Monday night’s scorer Matt McClure – drafted in for Jo Kuffour for the only change to the starting line-up – lacked the power or direction to trouble Ingham with a header, before the visiting keeper stood tall and made a good stop with his foot to foil Morgan after an incisive pass sent him clear.

Wycombe were starting to create chances for fun and Stuart Lewis had a shot hacked clear by York captain Chris Smith as another fine Grant delivery set up the bustling midfielder.

And in injury time they got the second goal they were looking for as Grant was tugged back by Jamal Fyfield for a second penalty, awarded by a furiously flagging linesman. Morgan stepped up again and hammered the ball straight down the middle to double Blues’ advantage.

A York team without a win since New Year’s Day made a double change at the interval as Alex Rodman and former Wanderers loan striker Ashley Chambers were both sent on, and the visitors almost got on the scoresheet after an early second half corner but Parslow headed wide.

Anthony Stewart said before the game he was going to open his Wanderers goalscoring account and he had a rare opening from a foray forward, although his shot from 25 yards never looked like it was going to trouble Ingham.

Instead a moment of magic from Grant extended the Wanderers lead. As was the case for the first goal it started thanks to a York player being caught napping, with the Blues winger nicking the ball from Parslow.

Nothing much appeared on for Grant, who simply sliced open the visiting defence with a graceful arcing run that took him past a couple of defenders before he rounded the helpless goalkeeper and calmly rolled home for a goal of real class and quality.

The same couldn’t be said for Walker’s hopeless finish at the other end as he slammed over a gaping net from six yards after Rodman had laid the ball on a plate for him.

Grant was replaced by Bruno Andrade to a rapturous reception, and the new winger carved out an opening straight away with a lovely teasing low cross that neither Sam Wood nor Morgan could quite convert.

A towering leap from Winfield resulted in the skipper rattling the bar with a powerful header but his luck was out for a matter of seconds. City could only scramble the ball away for a corner, from which Winfield planted a header into the back of the net at the near post as Wanderers scored four for the first time under Gareth Ainsworth.
