Matej Vydra plays less than an hour for Czech Republic handing Watford a boost ahead of Crystal Palace clash

International round-up: Watford handed Vydra boost International round-up: Watford handed Vydra boost

Matej Vydra's chances of playing for Watford against Crystal Palace tomorrow were handed a boost as the Hornets' hitman played less than an hour for the Czech Republic last night.

The Hornets' match with Crystal Palace was moved forward a day due to the game being televised on Sky Sports, but this leaves the club's international players with less time to recover.

However, Watford will welcome the fact Vydra was replaced after 56 minutes as the Czechs beat Turkey 2-0.

Watford team-mate Daniel Pudil did not join the Czech squad for the fixture as initially reported; he was on the standby list.

An injury update for the Hornets will be uploaded later this evening after we have spoken to Gianfranco Zola but this week's events suggest Tommie Hoban could also be available following injury.

The 19-year-old was allowed to return from international duty early by the Football Association of Ireland at the request of Watford.

Hoban has not been in action for Watford since New Year's Day due to injury but played on Tuesday night in the Republic of Ireland Under-19s' 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic.

Hornets midfielder Sean Murray was one of just two Republic of Ireland Under-21 players to play the whole game as Noel King's men pulled off an impressive 3-0 victory against the Netherlands.

Millwall's Aiden O'Brien scored twice and Wolves midfielder Anthony Forde was also on target.

Watford defender Nyron Nosworthy also played 90 minutes as Jamaica were held to a 0-0 draw with Mexico in the early hours of this morning.

It is currently unclear what time Nosworthy will return home to England, which suggests Lloyd Doyley may retain his spot in the side.

Two of the Hornets' midfield three from Saturday were also on international duty this week.

Cristian Battocchio played 45 minutes before being substituted at half time in Italy Under-20s' 2-0 defeat to Germany last night.

On-loan Chelsea midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah picked up his second England Under-21 cap as England beat Sweden 4-0 on Tuesday night.

Chalobah replaced Chelsea team-mate Josh McEachran after 67 minutes.

I agree with you though. But that's not the way it's done for some reason. I would try to get the points in the bag first and then take him off.

I can only see Vydra being on the bench, although, I would guess, it looks like all the other players (except Nos) will be fully available and will start. I hope, as regards Vydra, I am wrong.

I can't see how they won't feature at some point against Palace! Most of them are playing in a similar time zone and only have a few hours plane journey!
Not being funny but how long is it to Newcastle in a bus? Exactly.
It's good that Nos and Sean played 90 mins as they needed it! And Vydra, Chaloboah, Hoban played enough mins for no bad effects for Friday night!
I expect the following line up vs Palace;
Alumina
Ekstrand
Hall
Doyley
Chaloboah
Abdi
Pudil
Cassetti
Bottacchio
Vydra
Deeney

Subs: Bond, Nosworthy, Yeates or Murray, Geijo, Forrestieri, Eustace, Hoban or Muji Bai

Quite honestly that must be the best side in the Championship from 1 to 18!

Duffman, with Joel Ekstrands knee problem keeping him out of the Swedish team, and our managements style of keeping injured players out of the team until fully fit, he probably will not play. Although I hope it was a tactical injury and JEk does start.

Totally agree with this, all the post game treatment these lads get, should have them all in tip top form.
Vydras on fire, and will want to play but we do have very able back ups. We had some great wins when Fessi was partnering Deeney.

Please, please, please Mr Zola, the strongest team must at least start against Palace. With the exception of Nosworthy and Ekstrand (if still injured) all the others should be fit enough to play their nuts off - eight days to Brum so plenty of recovery/physio time.
If we lose, so be it, but please not because you tinker with a winning side.
There is £120 million riding on promotion if you include the parachute money so no more squad rotation (or subs) until we are a couple of goals up. Palace are no mugs and are better able than both Charlton and Bristol City to penalise us for not paying them due respect. Still love you though GFZ (in the biblical sense of course.

I reckon FF will play alongside Deeney and Vydra will come on with about half an hour to go if we are not winning.

In other news, I might make a bet that there will be a penalty. I have never seen so many penalties against one team as I have seen against us this season.

Cassetti or Beckham same age.

Beckham has been brilliant promoting himself and played at the highest level. He has just signed for another top team and although honourable by donating his wages to charity, he has once again put himself in the limelight and not for football reasons.
Cassetti on the other hand has joined a Championship side which I believe is a bigger challenge, he has met the challenge and playing week in week out.
Beckham should have done exactly the same and if he had, would have helped the club financially by putting bums on seats and proved to one and all that he really is world class.
So on that theory, Cassetti is a better player.

If there fit play them its that simple, every game now is a cup final, another Bristol City mess will play into palaces hands as we may well face them in the play offs should we lose this game, I firmly believe this is a nine pointer not x pointer, The other teams are always looking for our result first including Cardiff . Ask fatty who are the only team who could conceivable catch them and he will tell u Peterbrough !!!. He knows the Orns could catch them . Losing to palace would give all the promotion chasing teams a massive lift and prove our weakness. Play your best fit 11 Mr Zola as as suggested before take them off after the game is one and dont substitute V if hes on a hatrick.

Palace are no mugs and are better able than both Charlton and Bristol City to penalise us for not paying them due respect. Still love you though GFZ (in the biblical sense of course.
Apart from the slightly disturbing last sentence, I agree with every word. Tired or not, it is a better risk to take than putting out the second string again. However, I have a feeling that that little incident won't happen again.
I hope not ESH. After Bristol you were incandescent with rage, if it happens again I dare not think what vitriol will be posted. Gianfranco keep your head down!

Hats off to them, last season they were the best away supporters vocally.
Our away support is brilliant vocally, and we even seem to have more normal looking people on our travels! Be good if we took it into the Vic and it's why we need an unreserved seat area, and people to back their team.

Yes agree but as a previous post once stated, we want to sing but feel uncomfortable to do so at home matches, some people frown upon it, maybe it's the ones who were misplaced when the East stand shut down. So as we have agreed before definately need an unreserved section for the supporters who want to sing.

Everyone seems to be agreed on this -

1) Move the home supporters back to the Vicarage Road end.
2) Introduce unreserved seating behind the goal.
3) Move the families to the lower Rous.
4) Have a cash turnstile on the day.

The problem is the moving people from their favourite seats.
A solution that's been mooted, is open the newer part of old East Stand ( yes it's safe to do so) stick the away fans in there ( increase banter with home fans in Rookery) open up away part as unreserved with a cash turnstile.
This way no one has to move, the away fans are away from the families, and hundreds of casual supporters can pay as they go, rather than just not go at all because of the hassle involved getting tickets.

The East Stand can be opened but it will cost at least £ 200k to do. It is more cost effective to demolish the whole lot and erect a temporary stand like Blackpool - next to no capital cost and can be hired. However, before that, the SW corner needs to faciltate the new changing rooms.

Opening up the existing East Stand is just throwing money away. Better to spend money on something that creates an asset (ie, the SW corner) but that will, of course, be upwards of £ 1 million. Why they have not already done that I don't know although I suspect that the Pozzos are very careful businessmen and they need to see the demand for more seats increasing.

And the reason the SW corner hasn't been complete Is because of dual ownership with hospital and two parties have to agree.

I know because I have costed it out in detail. It is my profession. There are enormous H&S and structural issues compounded by changing legislation even since it was cordoned off. And whilst 200k is probably a max, it is well over 100k. Sorry, can't say more than that.

Yes, the dual ownership is another problem but not a critical one.

The cost of the demolition would be about 200-250k but it would be part of the process towards the final goal, that being the new stand. Therefore it is not "wasted" money. Bringing the existing stand back into operation WOULD be wasted money albeit with a cash flow advantage.

The cost of the temporary stand would be about the same for 2 years (250k) in hire costs, therefore less if it was taken down in a year. So, this has the advantages of not having to spend a big chunk of money straight away and the flexibility of being able to take it down when needed.

But of course, all this depends on the fitting out of the SW corner. A much bigger expense but again, part of the process therefore not wasted. And there is the business decision.

I haven't considered that but it may be possible. I would have to look at it again but the temporary stand would, I think, have to be located to the north of the dressing rooms, not right on top of them, otherwise there will be more cost in beefing up the structure underneath. It would have to be quite a small stand, about 1 500 seats probably (for the away supporters?).

The demolition cost would be a bit higher, 1. because it would be done in two stages and 2. due to the extra cost of careful removal of the structure adjacent to the changing rooms.

But it would still avoid the "wasted" expenditure referred to in my previous post and it may have other advantages such as facilitating an early start to the main construction work as half the demolition would have already been done.

So, good idea. I will think about that a bit more.

The cost and the planning will depend on whether it is a total football project or combined with something else such as residential, retail, etc.

Planners would favour either total football or something commensurate with the Health Campus initiative like a health centre. With residential and retails, access and noise, etc, become issues. Putting a stand there wouldn't be a problem per se as there was one there before and they knocked it down - and it is a football stadium (!), etc, but as soon as you introduce other things, you run into potential problems. As long as it isn't taller than the old stand, I don't envisage a problem especially as the lie of the land is on their side in this respect. So "outline planning" is effectively in place but detailed planning will have to wait for the design.

The cost could be anything from £ 10-20 million depending on what it is, capacity, height, shape, length, facilities, and whether the NE corner is brought into the scope - improved turnstiles, dual access to the Vicarage Road and the new stand, additional food and beverage, etc.

Well, I would have thought that is must be a temporary stand and if you are right in what I think you were suggesting, ie, that the SW corner could be taken out of the equation, then a small stand near the Vicarage road end could work.

That would increase the attendance to about 19 000. May not seem a lot but remember, last time we were in the PL, we often only got 18-19 000. Some matches were sell-outs and reached the capacity of 20 000 and could have gone higher if the stadium was bigger but they have to plan to the optimum levels, not for the one-off games.

I don't feel qualified to suggest anything. I know we can't go into the Premier League with a 3 sided ground. We'd be a laughing stock!
