Watford loan round-up: Midfielder Stephen McGinn achieves landmark following injury

Stephen McGinn completed his first competitive 90 minutes since suffering knee ligament damage almost two years as Shrewsbury Town beat Preston North End at the weekend.

Watford midfielder McGinn had previously made four substitute appearances on-loan with Shrewsbury before making his full debut for Graham Turner’s outfit in Saturday’s 2-1 win.

Also in League One, Chris Iwelumo made his debut on-loan at Oldham Athletic, who were beaten 3-1 at Walsall.

The former Scottish international also played the full 90 minutes as the Latics were comfortably beaten by the Saddlers, a result which saw boss Paul Dickov resign.

Striker Steve Beleck was also on the losing side in League One as Leyton Orient won 1-0 against Stevenage at Broadhall Way.

Beleck came on as a second-half substitute, replacing midfielder Anthony Grant in the 58th minute.

Elsewhere in League One, Lee Hodson was an unused substitute for Brentford who were beaten 3-0 at Yeovil Town.

In League Two, Southend United loanee Britt Assombalonga returned to the side following injury as the Shrimpers beat Oxford United 1-0. Assombalonga was replaced with 23 minutes left on the clock.

Aaron Tumwa, on-loan at Wealdstone, saw the Stones’ match with Lowestoft Town rained off, as did Piero Mingoia, who recently joined Boreham Wood on-loan for the rest of the season.

Third-year scholar Matt Bevans wasn’t part of the Chesham United side which won at Hemel Hempstead on Saturday after his loan spell with the Generals expired.

He has already signed for our owners. It doesn't really matter which club holds his registration, when he's ready to be sold, he will be. Hopefully, we now have owners who will not sell for peanuts but eventually, once the price is right, he'll go but a good quality replacements will be found. Keep the faith with our owners............

I wonder if Stephen McGinn will ever play for us again. I thought he was quite a bright hope before his injury but so much has changed now

Day 2
Well, you joke but in response to petsoundsnick's useful clarification the other day....."technically the Serie A club (Udinese) could release the forward at any time, allowing the Hornets to sign him as a free agent" - quote from BBC. Interesting. Didn't know about that loophole.

Seems to have been a long slow recovery for Stephen.

This could become annoying, not in the Caroline Quentin league of annoying, but annoying all the same.

Absolutely. How about a more in depth interview with Zola, and maybe find out more about his assistants, actually find out anything about them.

'On loan' only needs a hyphen if used as an adjective, as in 'the on-loan midfielder'. When someone is 'on loan at Shrewsbury' they are just that. No hyphen needed. Back to school, Tom Bodell (and your editor)

Personally, I thought Stepen McGinn had the (or has) the potential to be---and, before his injury, was becoming, a quality Championship player. Under the present regime, I wonder if that is enough. But I would like to see the club give him the time to recover and assess his potential. Good luck to him, in any event.

Yes, I think we would all like to know more about the backroom coaching staff, who, to me, are just names.

These guys are top notch coaches, If they weren't here we would not be in the position we find ourselves in. We are very lucky and that is why Zola feels so secure working at Watford.
