Matej Vydra's agent expects permanent move to Watford despite Premier League interest

Picture: Pippa Douglas Picture: Pippa Douglas

Matej Vydra's agent believes it is "very likely" the striker will become a Watford player this month despite interest from five Premier League clubs.

Vydra is on loan from Italian club Udinese whose owners, the Pozzo family, also bought Watford in the summer.

The Czech Republic international has excelled on loan at the Hornets and his 16 goals in 23 league games has attracted the interest of a host of clubs, including one top six Premier League side according to the player's agent. Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be the top six club interested.

The Pozzos are keen for Vydra to follow Fernando Forestieri in signing with Watford permanently, despite the interest, and Ondrej Chovanec expects that to happen.

Chovanec told Sky Sports: "At the moment, five Premier League clubs are interested in Matej.

"[But] we want Matej to stay with Watford at least until the summer. We are not planning any rush move for him.

"He has been at the club for six months, everything has worked fine, he has been coached by a great manager and the people love him. We have no reason to change anything."

The above comments suggest a move away could happen once Vydra's season-long loan ends but Chovanec then added: "Thanks to the connection [between Watford and Udinese], it is one wallet, basically.

"I have been in talks over this matter with the Watford owner and director. Originally, I did not want to push the matter, but now when I see how people in this club would like to make that [a permanent deal] happen, it is very likely that Matej will become a Watford player in January."

The Pozzo family make no secret of the fact they look to buy players young and sell them on for profit, which will almost certainly happen with Vydra eventually.

But Vydra's agent believes the Pozzos will want to hold on the striker for now and sell him for an increased figure in the future.

Chovanec said: "Udinese or Watford will not sell him for £5m. If you look back at the previous transfers of the clubs owned by the same owners, you will see that they only do big ones. They sold [Alexis] Sanchez to Barcelona [for £23m], for instance."

Everyone please note the agent's comment about one wallet. It is not important who officially owns these players, be it Udinese or Watford (or Granada).

I cannot understand this massive desire for us to sign these players permanently.

Ultimately the Pozzo's will decide to sell, if and when, they get the right price whether a player is owned by Watford or Udinese.

Pleeeeeaaase make this happen Watford!

Surely his future (and thus value) is better served staying here and developing his game, and hopefully getting a shot at the Premier league. If he performs just as well at the next level he will be worth well in excess of £15m...so would not be a wise move to offload now to a West Ham (Vydra would get a touch anyway as they play hoofball) or Southampton.

Then get Abdi and Deeney tied up also! Fingers crossed....

'Not sell for 5m.' Yup, pretty much what we have been saying here for the last few days. I don't see any move for Vydra---apart from the possibility of going back to Udinese. And the Pozzo's don't want that---they want the Premiership, and the players capable of achieving that to stay here.
As a guess, they will push for a five year contract for Vydra, with the intention of a major sell on deal in two, three years.

The top six side is surely Spurs or Everton. He'd be a great signing for either of them, but lets get a decent price for our Pozzos please. Nowt less than £20m.

He's one of the best strikers I have ever seen at the club - almost as good as Forestieri! And to think earlier in the season we had Big Chris and Garner up top.

Hope he stays as long as possible - would be so great to see him have a season for Watford in the Prem. That surely has to be worth more than any deal to sell now.

Better than Zaha in every department, why would the Pozzo's consider anything less than £10m?

If he signs it is little more than tokenism, quite simply we want him on the pitch and that is all we should be worried about. Which is why I disagree he should sign for us yet because it will probably affect his value if we don't go up. To my mind it can wait till the summer as he's still under a Pozzo contract and not going anywhere soon.

Not sure that is true. We could sign Vydra permanently and then say a year down the line the Pozzo's could still decide he would be better off at Udinese, for whatever reason they have that influence to make a transfer happen.

The Pozzo's will move players around their clubs to suit what they deem to be necessary.

If Vydra is continuing to develop at his current rate and he wants to stay then he will, regardless of who officially owns his registration.

It is the same people financing both clubs. They want the best for all 3 clubs. We do not need to sign him.

The most important thing is he keeps playing for Watford for the forseeable future (that we agree on) but I don't think signing him actually gaurantees that in the overall scheme of things.

This signing would certainly send out a message to other clubs that we are no longer 'little old Watford' who sell players below value to stay afloat, we now have competent owners who know how to run a football club and know when the right time to sell is. I'm certain we'll see Matej in a Watford shirt for a few seasons more. one of the biggest treats in football is watching a 'surprise package' player develop and grow in importance not over a season but visibly week by week.

Whether Matty Vyds signs a full contract with us, goes back to Udinese in the summer (if they've got 4 better strikers, they should win Serie A) or whatever - we should all be very grateful to be watching the blossoming of a young player who has evrey chance of having his name known all over Europe within a few years.

If Matej signed a new long contract as Fernando has just done it secures his future and makes him a far higher price if and when sold. We are very fortunate to have great owners who know how to get the best deals. Not like previous owners who sold any player for fast gain.Happy days.

Interesting debate to be had at the centre of this discussion, who holds the power? The player, the club, or the owners?

The quoted party for this story is the players agent, he has position to protect and a player to trumpet about.

To me, a big part of the reason that MV is doing so well is that GFZ has the resources and the skills to have put together a really good team in very quick time that plays to MV's strengths, in particular the layoffs from Deeney catching the defence square enabling MV to be one on one with the keeper. MV may well have been fourth or fifth striker at Udinese but here he is number one and banging them in. Credit where it is due.

The owners control of the three clubs, and particularly how that operates seems to be pivotal. Whereas a year ago at WFC it was hand-to-mouth operations and sell a player to survive, now we can hand out 5.5 year contracts and take the players to Spain for some warm weather training. That all has to be funded from within a structure that I for one know little about. I am not concerned about not knowing, just recognising that that is how it appears to work.

At the moment we use the loophole of international transfers effectively. If The governing body close the loophole then perhaps it will be more important that the registrations are transferred to the club the player plays for. Onward sale in the future may also have cross border tax implications (boring I know but relevant to the overall business). In the meantime the agent knows, the player knows, the manager knows and the owners know and yes we all know that it is in all of our interests that MV is a Watford player.

Enjoy the ride. We appear to have professionals looking after our interests.

let's not pretend players are innocent victims of dastardly agents. Agents are there to do the dirty work so players can shrug their shoulders and say 'its not me, its my agent.'

Its very, very rare that a player's agent does a deal the player didn't ask him too.

I agree it is an interesting debate over who holds the power and who ultimately decides who goes where in the Pozzo Empire. I don't think Vydra will make a decision on staying/signing with us until he knows which division he will be playing in next season. Neither Vydra or the Pozzos will want Vydra playing in the Championship next season so if we don't go up, maybe they will cash in or send him back to Udinese. This does open up the debate over where the power lies. For example if we get promoted but are languishing in the bottom half of the table but Udinese are flying and verging on a champs league spot, do the Pozzos simply instruct a selection of our best players to move to Udinese to assist with champs league qualification and thus a shed load of cash for the Pozzo's?

Regardless of all that I really blimming hope he signs for us!!

I can, it's basically what they do all the time, one rule for us and another rule for footballers, If Hazard had a problem the Ref should have intervened and added more time, I hear BBC3CR radio presenter this morning saying it's all the ball boys fault as he had tweeted before the game he was going to time waste, Wrong Hazard wouldn't have known that, this was just another petulant highly overpaid prima donna lashing out, thuggish behaviour which shouldn't be allowed and certainly not at a footy match, If I had kicked someone in the ribs at a match I'd be arrested and charged with assault minimum, But I was not surprised at the lack of condemnation of Hazard...It underlines what is wrong with footy and I suppose society, it's wrong to condemn a footy player for diving because you cannot nowadays call him the cheat that he is, you cannot call a goalie who has clawed a ball back from well over the line a cheat, " because it's human nature " not to say what you had done, and if you're a Reading player who knew the ball was never within a mile of the net a few years ago you are also a cheat. let's not pretend players are innocent victims of dastardly agents. Agents are there to do the dirty work so players can shrug their shoulders and say 'its not me, its my agent.' Its very, very rare that a player's agent does a deal the player didn't ask him too.
I'm sure some players, let's say the less academically inclined, leave it solely up to their agent. I think Deeney for example is being influenced by his agent. I'm not saying Deeney is thick, but his agent must be the reason he hasn't signed yet. If not then is he this great bloke people are claiming?

Sorry mate that's a one way assumption. How do you know it's not the club that are not offering what the going rate is? Point is we can only speculate, which in my book is pointless, as it all comes out in the wash.
Have not seen too many posts saying what a great bloke he is, just those of us who acknowledge his vital contribution. One thing I know for sure via twitter, he interacts with fans the most and always replies to sensible questions.

And yes as I see it on a totally non founded basis you are assuming Deeney can't think for himself. Why not say what's on your mind?

I'm actually supporting Deeney, admittedly in a rather roundabout way. I think he's being influenced by his agent. If it was down to him he would have just signed the contract as a payback to the club.
I'm sure Deeney can think for himself but can also be impressionable. It's easy to be influenced by people around you, as Troy has learnt to his cost before!

What fans dont get is that players are not fans of a club...they dont see it as we do. Deeney will sign once his agent gets him best deal. He is not looking to go anywhere at all.

Fair dos. Interesting none of the work he does with Birmingham kids ever gets air space, and I think that there are a few who would have Troys head on a pike, those who would not like to hear of that side of him.
As for agents? Every player has one, and every player lets his agent do his bidding.

It was Jason, someone heard it from a mate at work, who has good journo friends. Yeah ok. Why do people give this airspace? Spurs, i see that if they part with 15m for a untested talent, but Brighton? Do me a favour

I too look at that ludicrous football rumours website just for a laugh. This is the same website that said we would sign Frank Lampard, Mario Balotelli and Antonio Di Natale. Don't believe anything on it, the Pozzos know what they're doing.

Exactly and if he goes, then we replace him. We are not a one man team FFS!

Brighton probably think MV is in the same mould as Will Buckley easily taken for 1M.....Dream on Poyet, make it 21M and we'll consider it for his left leg.

I love watching the present 'Orns and think MV is a superb striker with a great ability to score goals and had he been one on one at Man City and scored to make it 1- 1 who knows but let's be real.

When we played Man City the gap between us was awesome and MV did not look such a great player against the likes of Kompany etc. He will need time to adjust to the Prem but if Danny Graham can do that successfully then who would doubt Vydras ability to do the same or better. (DG lost his starting place)
As for his value, in the Jan window next year with 10 goals under his belt in the Prem he has to be worth north of £20m and the Pozzos know that.
The agent gets a fee for him signing for us and then another fee for the bigger transfer in 12 months time. We get the title and MV gets his first medal
I would say that is win - win all round
