And your point is? What is this Troy watch. You can hardly equate a motoring offence with his original crime.

Track cyclists ride round an oval velodrome, yes, but what about road race cyclists like Bradley Wiggins who ride for three weeks in the Tour de France, well over 100 miles a day, often at more than 40-50 miles an hour, going from the baking sun of the flat to the freezing heights of the Alps or Pyrenees. Well, I expect in earlier days you'd have gone to a grammar school. Look at the examination results tables when they're published and I think you will find it is almost always the older, traditional grammar schools (those still existing, that is), that come top.

And I assure you I got A-levels in English and History, I may still even have the documentary proof somewhere, though I haven't seen it for years.

Personally, I never saw anything wrong with the grammar-secondary modern system. Grammar schools produced the academic pupils who became administrators, teachers, scientists, mathematicians, chemists, physicists, writers, actors, theatre directors, and (dare I say it) bankers, journalists and even politicians!

The secondary-mods took the less academically gifted who became artisans and tradespeople, plumbers, builders, electricians, etc, who were just as important to society - even footballers! I've written probably several million published words in my working life but I wouldn't dream of attempting to rewire my house or mend the washing machine. It's an old concept called horses for courses.

When comprehensive schools came in and treated everyone according to the lowest common denominator, that was when the educational system began to fall apart. The plain and simple fact is that kids aren't equal because they are all born with different skills and academic ability (or lack of it). I presume you are one of the latter category?

Your comparison of your 3-year-old to Bradley Wiggins merely shows how ridiculous you are. Are you thinking of entering your kid for the Tour de France then? I used to do a bit of racing myself - 10 and 25-mile time trials - and remember how tough it can be.

An interesting mixture, since it contains many private homes that were formerly council houses bought by the tenants under the Iron Lady's administration. I certainly didn't approve of many things she did - the destruction of our traditional industries like coal and steel, especially in the north, and the way she pandered to her spiv friends in the City, for instance - but letting people buy their council houses was perhaps one of the cleverer things of her time.
