Watford to travel to Premier League champions Manchester City in FA Cup third round

Watford have been drawn away to Premier League champions Manchester City in the third round of the FA Cup.

The match will see Gianfranco Zola line up against Italian compatriot Roberto Mancini as the Hornets bid to cause a shock against City, who are currently second in the top flight following yesterday's 1-1 draw against Everton.

The tie is due to be played on the weekend of January 5 and 6.

if 12 months ago you'd told me we'd draw the champions away in the cup this year, the last thing I'd expect to think is 'that is really not a draw City would prefer'.

The fact that that IS exactly what I think shows just how far we've come.

This will be far from the banker the bookies will think it is. Licking my lips at seeing us go up against them. Free-flowing attacking football against a team that doesn't expect teams to really go at them, in a game where it doesn't really matter if we lose soZola will throw the shackles off even more than he already does.

12 months ago our players would be terrified of this game. The squad we have now will be counting down the days impatiently and hammering on the Fonz's office door begging to play.

Confidence hasn't been this high since Boothers first full season, and I am gonna have a cheeky punt on this being the upset of the round.

We get a third as shared both clubs and FA after costs deducted.

Pricing will be £25 adults £10 kids I'm guesstimating

40,000 ppl at mean average £20 = £800,000 minus costs £200,000 I reckon we get a third of £600,000

If on TV, as away team playing a prem team I think it's another £125,000

But suspect that unlikely to be on TV as some other big games and not at the Vic

So £200,000 net gain is my guesstimate

Which is the equivalent of net (after costs) from two league games.

Then the players and management might have a draw or win bonus to come off the £200,000 (but then more revenue from replay or next round)

Still much better than Stockport at home in front of 8,000 for a tenner !!!

Just to correct one point we will not get 50% of the gate money, it is divided as follows:
(iii) In matches played in the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Rounds of the Competition Proper, the net gate receipts of each match shall be divided as follows:
45% to each Club competing in the match.
10% to the Pool.
(iv) In replayed matches in the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Rounds of the Competition Proper the net gate receipts of each match shall be divided as follows:
5% to The Association.
42.5% to each Club.
10% to the Pool.

I would have thought Watford may just have had a better chance of winning the tie if Manchester City had not been dumped out of the European Champions League because City then might have fielded a third team, bearing in mind that to the big clubs the FA Cup is no longer the major prize it once was, sadly for the history of the game.

However, I suspect City would quite fancy a double of the Premiership and FA Cup, so they will probably field one of their best teams from their squad.

Watford FC striker Troy Deeney has been fined after pleading guilty to motoring offences.

Deeney, 24, admitted failing to produce a driving licence, proof of insurance and proof of having an MOT during a hearing at Solihull Magistrates Court last Thursday (November 29).

The in-form frontman was stopped by West Midlands Police close to his Chelmsley Wood home on September 27, less than three weeks after he was released from jail having served three months of a 10-month sentence for kicking a man in the head on a night out in Birmingham.

Deeney was fined £666 and ordered to pay £80 in costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

The former Walsall striker has scored eight goals this season, six in his last five matches.
And your point is? What is this Troy watch. You can hardly equate a motoring offence with his original crime.
He obviously has a licence otherwise that would have been part of the charge.
I do agree with the last part, he's scored eight goals, six recently. That's all I'm interested in.

My point, CouncilHouse, is in the first paragraph of my post - which, for your benefit, is repeated below

You take the bait every time, don't you, CouncilHouse?!! Night night
Breaking news!!! Watford striker was spotted mixing his recyclable plastic with his card and paper only 2 months after his release from jail. The Watford Observer would like to thank weird Deeney stalker Alex from Sarf Oxhey for bringing this to the attention of all that give a 5hit.
Deeney can do what he likes as long as he's banging in the goals.
We all know that footballers are exempt from the law anyway!

Pity the Yorkshire Ripper's a bit old for football now. I believe he was a useful midfielder in his day.

As for Deeney, surely it must be obvious to even the most blind and bigoted fan that he is, like many footballers, not just as thick as the proverbial plank but as an entire woodshed. He clearly has very little respect for the law, assuming he even knows what it is.

"Respect for the law" there's a good one.

Sorry Roy but there's no victim this time, and he'll pay for his laxness. If Troy has a low opinion of the system I'm sure he is not alone, built by Tories for Tories under the guise of serving the public.

Motoring offences are NOT victimless crimes. At the end of the day we all pay, one way or another.

I wonder why he failed to produce his licence, proof of insurance and MoT certificate if he had them? Was any explanation given to the court?

I find the views of some of you cockeyed fans increasingly hilarious! Presumably you wouldn't mind a mass murderer or a paedophile playing for Watford as long as he scored goals?

Maybe he's thinking of 1986 when it did go to two replays. The teams drew 1-1 at City, 0-0 at Watford and Watford won the second replay at City 3-1.

Yes, I was thinking of the 86 one!! I went to all 3 matches, from memory we were outplayed in the first two and stormed home in the third. Those were the days before penalties ruined the magic of the fa cup!

I was speaking in general terms.

Although Deeney wasn't charged with driving without a licence, insurance or MoT (only failing to produce them), those offences pose a serious danger to the public, yet magistrates seem to let motorists off lightly and some of the comments above seem to suggest that some drivers think being caught is a joke and doesn't matter.

Apart from the risk of an unlicensed, uninsured driver killing or injuring someone, it affects everybody when the insurance companies put their premiums up.

The costs of a court hearing are also considerable when all kinds of unidentifiable things are taken into account, so I doubt £751 covered it all.

In any event, he must be very stupid if he didn't realise he was committing an offence by not producing the documents. Does no-one at Watford FC take responsibility for guiding tearaways like Deeney and helping to keep him on the straight and narrow?

I like to say, in the old cliche, that I was educated in the university of life.I have spent all my working life in publishing of one kind or another - newspapers, magazines and books - and consider myself a highly literate exponent of the English language.

From what I read these days, modern exams are dumbed down so that almost anybody can pass them and I constantly hear of employers complaining that young people are semi-literate and innumerate and unemployable. That is probably because they mostly go to comprehensive schools, with incompetent teachers, where everyone is dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. Bring back the grammar schools!

You know how much I love an argument with lutondowney jr, but Roy I must agree with him here.
There are many floors in your argument, the main one being that in a recent survey football fans were deemed ten times smarter than Olympic fans. Secondly you claim footballers, "get a ball between upright sticks of wood," yet all cyclists do is ride in an oval, all swimmers do is move their arms and legs up and down, all runners do is move from A to B. You can argue against all sports for being pointless.

You really don't get it, do you? He is clearly a person of very limited intelligence and education and an affront to most civilised people, but because he occasionally manages to get a ball between a couple of upright sticks of wood to thick football fans he is a hero!

Isn't it interesting that there isn't a single footballer on the short list for the Sports Personality of the Year? Instead, we have a line-up of our magnificent Olympians and Para-Olympians - Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy, Jess Ennis, Mo Farah, David Weir, Ellie Simmonds, Andy Murray et al? REAL sportsmen and women, not the dregs from the gutters of Birmingham and other sink estates.
And I would argue that your pointless, gianpooper the cyber warrior
Couldn't resist it.

Track cyclists ride round an oval velodrome, yes, but what about road race cyclists like Bradley Wiggins who ride for three weeks in the Tour de France, well over 100 miles a day, often at more than 40-50 miles an hour, going from the baking sun of the flat to the freezing heights of the Alps or Pyrenees. Winning the Tour de France is a far more gruelling sporting achievement than any footballer ever experiences. The competition is going to be intense this year but I think Wiggo will win it, especially after also winning gold at the Olympics.

Well, in my day you had to pass the 11-plus to get to a grammar school. If you failed you went to a secondary modern and I didn't fail.

And I assure you I got A-levels in English and History, I may still even have the documentary proof somewhere, though I haven't seen it for years.

Personally, I never saw anything wrong with the grammar-secondary modern system. Grammar schools produced the academic pupils who became administrators, teachers, scientists, mathematicians, chemists, physicists, writers, actors, theatre directors, and (dare I say it) bankers, journalists and even politicians!

The secondary-mods took the less academically gifted who became artisans and tradespeople, plumbers, builders, electricians, etc, who were just as important to society - even footballers! I've written probably several million published words in my working life but I wouldn't dream of attempting to rewire my house or mend the washing machine. It's an old concept called horses for courses.

When comprehensive schools came in and treated everyone according to the lowest common denominator, that was when the educational system began to fall apart. The plain and simple fact is that kids aren't equal because they are all born with different skills and academic ability (or lack of it). I presume you are one of the latter category?

Your comparison of your 3-year-old to Bradley Wiggins merely shows how ridiculous you are. Are you thinking of entering your kid for the Tour de France then? I used to do a bit of racing myself - 10 and 25-mile time trials - and remember how tough it can be.

Well, I expect in earlier days you'd have gone to a grammar school. Look at the examination results tables when they're published and I think you will find it is almost always the older, traditional grammar schools (those still existing, that is), that come top.

An interesting mixture, since it contains many private homes that were formerly council houses bought by the tenants under the Iron Lady's administration. I certainly didn't approve of many things she did - the destruction of our traditional industries like coal and steel, especially in the north, and the way she pandered to her spiv friends in the City, for instance - but letting people buy their council houses was perhaps one of the cleverer things of her time.

It's well known that 80% of students at Watford Boys Grammar school have tried class A drugs, with 45% becoming addicted. Compare this with local comprehensives where only 2% have tried class A drugs.

The right to own one's home is a basic, fundamental freedom that many former council tenants took advantage of - and on very preferential terms, too.

Homelessness is a complex problem with numerous reasons for it. In many cases - and I'm not saying all by any means - it is probably their own fault through fecklessness. I should also point out that a major part of the homeless problem is caused by immigrants who have chosen to come here, swelling Britain's ever-increasing population to bursting point. Cap immigration, as no government has yet had the courage to do, and that would be a start.

Do you have proof of this? Is there some kind of documentary evidence or is your remark about it being "well known" just a piece of local folklore and hearsay?

I'd be interested to hear what the headteacher of Watford BGS has to say about this when you suggest that almost half his pupils are drug addicts!

BTW, I forgot to mention that if anyone wants to chuck punches or darts at their TV screen, you may just have an opportunity tonight on BBC1 at 9.0 p.m. in the last episode of the current series of Who Do You Think You Are? !!!

I cannot guarantee that I will be appearing because I know what television people are like with their editing, but I was filmed for 2 hours at the Society of Genealogists in London with the stand-up comedian John Bishop, helping him trace his family tree. Of course, not many of you will see it, I imagine, because's football on ITV4 (Tottenham) at the same time!

Roy, as a big fan of John Bishop and the fact my Mums side were Liverpudlians , I'd be interested to know what he was like. Down to earth I would imagine.
I spent a year doing my family tree, and it was addictive, frustrating and all consuming. One very interesting subject is genealogy even from us sink estate kids!

John Bishop is a smashing chap. I really enjoyed meeting him. He is indeed down to earth and I thought he came across as such on the show.

His Scouse accent is stronger than my Yorkshire one, though!

I thought last night's episode was one of the best ever, as the production team found two cracking stories about his ancestors. I particularly liked the one about his great-great-grandfat
her who was an army bandmaster, then a singer at Chichester Cathedral and finally became a black-faced minstrel in Liverpool.
