GRAVESEND Ladies Hockey Club made a winning start to 2012 with a 3-1 success at Ashford’s second string on Saturday.
It was their first game since the Christmas break and despite the lack of recent action, Gravesend started strongly and were soon on the score sheet when Odette Kelham fired the first penalty corner of the game beyond the reach of the Ashford keeper.
Karen Jones saw an opening and slotted a pass in behind the Ashford defence, allowing Hayley Stringer to dart in and tip a shot home to double the advantage.
Gravesend then seemed to lack some concentration and Ashford were able to pull a goal back when they were awarded a penalty corner which they converted it.
The second half continued to be very competitive but it was Gravesend who were on the score sheet again, mid way through, when Di Prior, having injected a penalty corner, ran into the post to strike into the goal.
